Show iuoois AND OHAlS I Remarks of George Q Cannon Can-non Resented VILE PRACTICES DENIED Superintendent Cooper Says that Such Contamination as Described by Mr Cannon Does not Come from Attendance Upon tho Public I Schools President Wilson of tho Board of Education and Other I Members Deny tho Truth of the Accusations Call for Particulars I 1 The remarks made by President I George Q Cannon nt the slake conference con-ference of the Mormon church on Saturday Sat-urday that patents little realized the evil which the minds of even thu smallest boys In tin public schools are filled with and the amount of vile practices prac-tices among those children Is something some-thing astonishing were productive of a good deal of talk t among school people peo-ple and patrons yesterday Superintendent Superin-tendent of Schools Cooper denies emphatically em-phatically that the conditions described de-scribed by Mr Cannon exist in the public schools In this city and a number I num-ber of members of the Board of Education Edu-cation who were seen deny any knowledge I knowl-edge of such a state of affairs and discredit I dis-credit Mr Cannons statement SUPT COOPERS VIEW Superintendent Cooper said I Is safe to assert that in public schools where the regulations are wise and I oversight is I careful as they are In this city moral contamination Is not easy The communication of vice is I secret rather than public Muth more Is lobe lo-be feared from the congregation of small groups of children than from their association in largo numbers The public playground which Is properly supervised and the schoolroom In charge of n good teacher are the last places where evils that corrupt aro found prevailing I is the small company com-pany and the secluded place that furnish fur-nish the opportunity for vicious conversations con-versations and practices I is undeniably unde-niably true that some children who attend at-tend the public schools suffer contain inatlon so do children who attend private pri-vate schools and those who attend none but that such contamination comes from attendance upon the public pub-lic schools or that they are In anyway any-way responsible for it I very emphatically em-phatically deny SCHOOL BOARD EXPRESSIONS Members of the Board of Education gave expression to the following statements state-ments President Wilson o the Board of Education Ed-ucation While from the report of President George Q Cannons speech at the stake conference It would appear ap-pear that he was severely criticising our public schools yet I cannot believe be-lieve that his remarks were so intended In-tended All schools whether public or private secular or sectarian are required re-quired to deal with pupils deficient in morals but In my opinion the moral standing of both pupils and teachers In our schools will compare favorably with those of any schools Moral training Is as much a part of our course of training as Is sand s-and the development of the moral as well as the mental faculties in n practical prac-tical way Is the constant aim of those I In charge of the Salt Lake City public schools The record made during the past ten years Is certainly a source of pride to all who are In sympathy with our public school system CAUSE FOR ASTONISHMENT I Judge Henderson am astonished at such an utterance I dont Just sec why President Cannon made It in connection con-nection with the schools I never heard of any such state of affairs If Mr Cannon knows of its existence Ot knows of any want of care In those who have charge of the schools it is i his ditty to make it known say where it exists and Jlx the responsibility so that the Superintendent can remedy IL If the public schools are not responsible responsi-ble for the evil which Mr Cannon says exists he had no business to connect It with the schools Our schools I believe be-lieve and I think it is generally acknowledged ac-knowledged compare favorably with those of any city In the country SHOULD BE SPECIFIC W A Nelclen From the context I gather that Mr Cannons remarks refer re-fer to Mormons The Board of Education Educa-tion has no knowledge of the existence of such conditions In the public schools I Mr Cannon has knowledge of It he should make It known In order that it might ho corrected I he knows It he Is doing wrong in not pointing it out definitely I the matter were brought hrLVre him however have no doubt he would follow his usual custom and say that ho either didnt say it or meant something else E 13 Crltchlow I suppose Mr Cannon Can-non meant public schools in general allover over the State I dont think he meant Salt Lake schools Inparticular Chil dren especially boys swear and use bad language sometimes and do wrong things but they are no worse in Salt Lake than elsewhere I had not hoard of such a condition here as Mr Cannon Can-non describes I suppose however he has a knowledge and an experience which I dont possess Simon Bambergcr am astonished that President Cannon should make such statements I dont think they are true |
