Show N THE SECOND INAUGURAL I President McKinley will today for I the second time be Inaugurated President Presi-dent of the United Slates I is an I Immense honor it carries with It I mighty responsibilities It Is an unwritten t responsibites I Js l written law that no man shall serve a third term as President or thisRepub 1 lie The reasons for It are manifold First it is not fair for one man to I longer monopolize that honor Again it would be easy were the 11 rule to be broken for it to he extended to a life tenure which Is against the I theory of our Institutions Again even in eight years term of one man begets carelessness subordinate public pub-lic offices and inevitably In so long a term some barnacles attach themselves to the party in power and need scraping scrap-ing off j So as the President enters upon this i j second term it seems to us the uppermost I upper-most thought In his mind ought to be t How can I under this great honor best serve my country and my countrymen coun-trymen i He cannot have failed to see thathe l has been accused of vacillation and I disposition to subordinate his will to I the will of his close party friends I We hope that on this inaugural day the thought will steal Into his mind I I that he cannot escape history that as I chief magistrate of the worlds fore I I most nation for all time to come his II acts will be held up and Judged and that one of two verdicts will go Into history either that he was or was not worthy of the exalted trust put upon IvTni Some of his close friends will < not 6e remembered for they arc but I of the earth earthy the accident of t J w a1hol of the sinister influences I that sometimes prevail have given them position but there Is not In their I I composition a trace of the dlvlno light I that endures The President will be judged not by what men advise him I to do but by what he docs He has been immensely favored In his last term the Spanish war came on with all f Its glory and but little shame the misfortunes of the outside world gave to this country an unparalleled market mar-ket and made It financially the first of powers and the reflex at least of that glory Is reflected on him and now In the down of this new century is opened before him a chance to r dtp d-tp his laurels by bringing tho right out of the Philippines and oat of Cuba and by jxecutlng Justice a t home TlieI I 1 nation Is watching to see If he Is great t enough for all this and his two Incentives to work ought to be gratitude grati-tude fOr what this nation has done for him and second a desire to fix his own Tame In history In such a light that upon the winsome picture there shall be no stain |
