Show Ten Commandments Of Safe Driving Listed by Judge A code of ten commandments for safe winter driving is announced an-nounced by Judge Harry Porter, veteran member of the National Safety Council's Committee on Winter Driving Hazards. Judge Porter points out that only by the observance of the basic principles prin-ciples by all drivers as individuals indi-viduals can chaotic traffic conditions con-ditions be avoided. It only takes a relatively few cars that slip, slide or stall to tie up traffic and snow removal equipment following follow-ing a blizzard. Judge Porter urges the careful observance of these "ten safety commandments," which are now based on years of research by teams of automotive engineers, tire experts, professional drivers and government officials. Most of them are observed by good car and truck drivers as a matter of course. It's worth while however, how-ever, to re-check them from time to time as failure to abide by any one of them can cause an accident or considerable delay. de-lay. Here they are: 1. Install anti-freeze after the cooling system is flushed out and checked for leaks. 2. Have good tires. See that the tires have good treads. Front wheels also need good treads for "cornering." 3. Always carry reinforced tire chains. Insure your ability to "go" on ice or in deep snow with reinforced chains. They are far superior for severe conditions condi-tions such as deep snow and slippery hills. 4. Be sure wipers work. Be sure windshield wiper blades are in good condition and with arm pressure of at least an ounce for each inch of blade length. 5. Use your defroster. Keep windshield clear of ice interior fogging. 6. Make sure all lights work. Headlights, stop lights, tail lights and directional signals should be tested frequently. 7. Be sure you can start. Have engine tuned up for sure starting start-ing in cold weather and have the spark plugs and distributor point checked. 8. Be sure you can stop. Have brakes adjusted frequently, linings lin-ings checked and free from grease. 9. Check battery frequently for proper charge and make sure it is always full of fluid. 10. Have exhaust system in order. or-der. Muffler and tail pipe should be checked frequently to avoid leakage of exhaust gases into car when windows are closed. |
