Democrat Chairman Appoints 15 to Registration Group John M. Bailey, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Com-mittee, announced the appointment appoint-ment of 15 members of the Congress Con-gress to a National Voters Registration Regis-tration Committee. Senator Vance Hartke of Indiana, In-diana, chairman of the Democratic Demo-cratic Senatorial Campaign committee com-mittee and Congressman Michael Kirwan of Ohio, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Cam-paign Committee, will serve as ex-officio members. The Registration Committee will spearhead a national drive to assist some 108 million Americans Ameri-cans to register and vote in the 1962 election. "The main emphasis will be to reach the 40 million Americans who did not vote in the 1960 presidential election and another 25 million who have moved or have come of voting age since November, 1960. This is a tremendous tre-mendous undertaking." The membership of the committee com-mittee includes Sen. Frank E. Moss of Utah. Mr. Bailey designated Senator Pell and Congressman Thompson as co-chairmen. At the same time, he named Matthew A. Reese Jr. as Registration Reg-istration Director of Democratic National Committee and will have him work closely with the National Voters Registration Committee. Mr. Bailey said he was asking state chairmen across the nation to establish active registration teams to carry on house to house canvassing, to provide transportation transpor-tation and to stimulate local election officials to facilitate registration procedures. "It is a ' sad thing to find as you travel around the country that many states appear to discourage dis-courage rather than encourage maximum voter participation. In some areas the prospective voter has only one place to register, and that is the county courthouse." court-house." . |
