FLEISCH Assistant Cashier (2-2- 4 3-- 3) national sponsor of the forest in-dustries' Tree Farm program to grow timber as a crop on private owned, taxpaying forest land. Forester Lauds Multiple Use Of Utah Forests Utah's forests are like a Boy Scout jack knife they can be put to 101 uses. This view is advanced by J. C. McClellan, chief forester for American Forest Products In-dustry, who said much of Utah's forest land as managed today for timber production while values for water, grazing, wild life and other benefical uses are main-tained or even improved. ; "Proper forest management to obtain the most timber growth also improves other forest value. A forest offers multiple benefits when it is managed to provide a combination of values and serv-ices greater than any single use." The industry forester said that water production is one of the most important values of Utah forests, and more than 20 million acres in Utah nearly fbur fifths of the state are classified as watershed. Thinning dense stand of trees judiciously on such land to allow more moisture to accu-mulate in storage basins is one example of how, forest manage-ment benefits water production. He emphasized that removing all trees, on the other hand, is poor forestry which could hurt a watershed by causing erosion. Selective timber harvests aid the recreationists by creating logging roads that take him into scenic areas otherwise inacces-sible for camping, fishing, and hunting.. Mr. McClellan declared that timber and steaks also go hand in hand on some 4 million acres of woodland range in. the Utah public domain grazingland. Light cuts in heavily wooded stands open up such areas to sunlight that promotes maximum grass growth.
