Show ; THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 1961 j Page NineteenSec. 2 Utah 4-- H Youth Are Delegates To National Congress In Chicago "Making the best better" has won all-expen- se trips to the 39th National 4-- H Club Congress in Chicago for three college fresh-men and a high school senior. They have been named state winners for their outstanding work in 4-- H programs, according to the Cooperative Extension Service. ,'.v. v;.,:v yy?.: "A r Ann Carrigan Boyd Nielsen v..:.:vw.y;. i 1 LaRee Anderson Cathy Schutx 'After spending the entire sum-mer of 1959 clearing the land of rubbish and trees for his project, Nielsen learned that it would be impossible to obtain water rights. The average teenager might have given up. But this deter-mined noticed moisture seeping into the basement dur-ing the winter, and concluded that underground water was present. , As soon as weather permitted, he started digging and found the water source about seven feet down. He. sent for a pump, con-nected it to an old motor and installed the necessary electrical wiring, thus overcoming seem-ingly insurmountable obstacles in his path to success. Young Nielsen was presented with the state 4-- H citizenship award last year. He is president of the Junior Leaders' 4-- H Coun-cil. A girl who can "can," LaRee Anderson, 18, of 30 W. 1st South, Providence, is winner of the Kerr 4-- II canning program award. The Cache county champion for the past five years, she has preserved approximately 2,500 jars of food. Living in a com-munity where fruits and vegeta-bles are plentiful, Miss Anderson takes full advantage of the sup-ply. Miss Anderson actively partici-pates in school, church and com-munity activities, but her father recently remarked that his se-cret in acquiring her complete cooperation for any project is to put a 4-- H emblem on it. A delicious Swiss steak dinner has won the Utah state cham-pionship in the foods preparation program for Cathy Schutz, 17, of Tooele. Recognition for expert proficiency in 4-- H projects is hardly a novelty to this however. She has been Tooele county champion of several projects during each of the past few years, in addition to a state blue ribbon received in a record book contest. A for seven years, she cooks most of the meals at home and does all of the family preserving. She is leader of a foods cluh, and often reminds her charges that, "He who cooks messy must clean up same." She takes great satisfaction in the blue ribbons won by their cookies exhibit at county and state fairs. This foods program is spon-sored by Betty Crocker of Gen-eral Mills. Utah's delegate in the home economics program is Ann Carri-gan, 18, of Morgan. A for the last nine years, she has re-ceived top recognition in meal preparation, food demonstra-tions, canning, dress revue and home economics judging. Foods has always been her favorite program, and she has given almost a dozen demonstra-tions during the past year. Her local club decided to learn the art of candy making last year, and made up attractive gift boxes which they sent to mis-sionaries. Leader of a first year 4-- H foods club, Miss Carrigan takes pride in the fact that all of her received blue ribbons on their exhibits and record books at the state fair. Her trip has been donated by Montgomery Ward, home eco-nomics program awards sponsor. Boyd Nielsen, 18, of West Jor-dan, has received the Allis-Chal-me- rs trip award for his outstand-ing achievements in the garden program. Although he has been a 4-- H member for eight years, he is a comparative beginner In this program, having enrolled about two years ago. Yet his exhibits have won seven first awards this year.
