Show The Battle to Save a Limited Resource Air The air we breathe, perhaps more than anything else upon which we rely for life, seems unlimited in supply. While some cities have noticeable pollution problems, we generally think of air as a virtually endless commodity certainly not something of which we shall ever run out. Yet that is exactly what now occurs in many cities and towns, both in this country and others. The increasing amount of pollutants pol-lutants poured into the atmosphere has begun to reach the saturation point. Our cities, we are told, do have limited air resources. Research turns up increasing evidence that our health is endangered. Since there is no way to increase the amount of air, it is necessary to control the polluting gases and solids which are a by-product of our way of life. A recent report shows how mounting evidence connects air pollution with sickness. This is the smoggy side of the picture. The sunny aspect, which is also set forth, is the mounting attack on the problem from a variety of sources. Industry, individuals and government are cooperating in this effort. They must, if the air is to continue to be as the expression goes as free as the air we breathe. |
