He state was founded by those seeking re-ligoius re-ligoius freedom and their descendants de-scendants should uphold this principle for all. A few suggestions sugges-tions follow as to how to handle hate literature when you receive it. 1. Recognize the source. President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon have warned against religious prejudice in the campaign. There is no major political party in back of the movement. Usually such material ma-terial is the work of neo-fascist groups who seek the overthrow of our way of life by destroying both political parties and the decent, honest people who are in them. 2. Beware of super patriots. These people usually operate under high sounding phrases and carry on by trying to work their way into the major parties. 3. Disregard rumors directed By BOB HICKS It seems the hatemongers are taking advantage of the election year to vent their spleen on certain cer-tain religious and racial groups within the country. A group in the south is circulating a pamphlet pam-phlet supposedly published by the Catholic Committee for His-torcial His-torcial Truth. The organization is fictitious. This pamphlet pretends to give directions for the taking over of the country by the "Agents of the Vatican," through a presidential presi-dential acndidate meaning, of course, Senator Kennedy. The pamphlet is part of a well organized or-ganized campaign to sell hatred to the American people, to a dagree never known before in the history of this country. These same groups have tried (several times to vent their ill-minded ill-minded prejudices. During the New Deal they tried to tie FDR with Communism. In 1928 the object of their attacks was Al against races ana religions. iook closely and you will see that the groups loudest in their anti-Catholicism anti-Catholicism are also rabidly anti-Semitic, anti-Negro, and against the National Council of Churches, Seventh-day Adven-tists, Adven-tists, Mormons and other groups. Something in their nature seems to compel them to hate, if not one group, then another. They are not condoned by true liberals lib-erals or honest conservatives. The American people will shun this hate campaign. They stand for justice and fair play and this includes the overwhelming overwhelm-ing majority in both political parties. i . Smith. A minister in the south accused Smith at the height of the campaign of having been arrested ar-rested while driving drunk down Broadway at fifty miles per hour. Smith couldn't drive and was never arrested for a traffic violation. The same groups have frequently fre-quently had recourse to the so-called so-called Knights of Columbus oath, supposedly pledging the Knights to destroy by force all opposition to the Church. This so called oath had its origin in 1850, not among the Knights but with a small political organization organiza-tion called the American (!) or "Know Nothing" Party, which was dedicated to anti-Catholicism, anti-Negroism, and anti-just anti-just about everything else-ism. The other day there came to my attention an article entitled "The Vatican's Candidate" again dwelling upon the same theme. This ditty called upon even the Catholics to vote for Protestant political candidates, since only Protestants could qualify to uphold up-hold our freedoms. -Unfortunately Senator Kennedy didn't know about this before he joined the Navy and was almost killed while trying to save his buddies as mentioned in this column some time back. Senator Moss, at the Democratic Demo-cratic state convention, called |
