Show Road Chief Pushes War on Billboards State road officials have announced an-nounced thatt hey are continuing the drive against sign encroachments encroach-ments on Utah highways. Utah communities and individuals indivi-duals concerned have already been notified to take immediate steps to remove the commercial signs that encroach on any state highway right of way, according to C. Taylor Burton, chairman of the State Road Commission. Mr. Burton pointed out that in a recent statewide inspection by the Federal Bureau of Public Roads, the state obtained an excellent ex-cellent rating with but one exception: ex-ception: the encroachment of signs along the right of way. The Bureau of Public Roads has indicated that allocation of federal funds to Utah could be held up if the state did not take action to get the situation remedied. reme-died. Mr. Burton further said: "These signs on the right of way form a hazard along our high-days high-days since they often obscure vision. In addition, motorists can not clearly see official warning signs posted along the route." According to state regulations the signs must be self supporting. They must also be erected on the property of the owners and shall not extend across any sidewalk at less than 12 feet in height. Specifications also state that signs mounted on private property prop-erty must not extend on any portion por-tion of the roadway below 20 ft. State road officials have said that anyone wishing ,to place a commercial sign adjoining state highway right of way, including outside of any city limits, should contact the nearest District Office Of-fice of the State Road Commission.
