Show Utah Foundation Describes New Michigan Laws A new type of driver demerit law recently enacted by the state of Michigan is described in a current report issued by Utah Foundation, the private governmental govern-mental research organization. Under the new Michigan law, a driver license re-examination is required for any motorist who collects 12 demerits during any two-year period. In addition, the Michigan Secretary of State staff is authorized, at its . discretion, dis-cretion, to call in for an interview inter-view any driver who has accumulated accu-mulated nine demerits. Convictions for various traffic offenses in Michigan bring two to six demerits each, depending upon the nature and seriousness of the offense. Re-examination may result in suspension or revocation rev-ocation of a person's driving privilege. Foundation analysts note that Michigan became the tenth state to enact a point system for traffic traf-fic violations. The new demit law replaces a variable plan which has been used to re-examine about 30,000 Michigan drivers annually. |
