Next to the Sjjllivan-Corbt- t fight lf, the subject of most general conversa-tion last evening was the journalistic enter-prise of The Times in getting an "extra" on the street, within a few minutes after the battle, containing a complete account of it. At about that time our, esteemed morning contemporaries were busy clipping the lat-e- at news from the afternoon issue of The Times for their morning's consumption. We do like enterprise. . . EDITORIAL NOTES. Thb Barber company is persistent It has experience. Now we can all call John L. hard names. He cannot lick everybody. The committee on pavinjr can do a great deal tonight to facilitate the work. There is no comfort for the Democrats in Peck's statistics, because figures will not lie. ' There is no immediate danger in Salt Lake from cholera; there is from the Bar-ber asphalt. Let us keep out the latter. The silence which the Tribune preserves upon the constant accessions to the Repub-- 'portion of the menwo voted the Demo- - cratic ticket in that runty last year wif repeat that act of fioliy again this year. Why should.theyiy The issues of. the campaign are being squarely discussed this year. The thre great industries of Sevier county are wool-growin-mining and farming. The prosperity of those industries, is a vital matter to every man woman and child in Sevier county. ' ; " - - A vote for the Demooraticjticket cast by a citizen of Savior tieans that- - he wants the Republican' tariff oc.,Sevie county wool removed, the income fro that ouroe reduced and every man womanmade poorer. "J A Democratic vote means thk wants the wages in the mines of rJ8 vale reduced to the miserable Bjdar ' of wages paid to the wretchedBasants Of Mexico, as the logical res" of the Democratic plan of removiri tbe duty on Mexican lead ores. 7 A Democratic vote mes the reduc- - tion of the values of fay products m Sevier county, becaie there will be less consumers and nose who remain will hve less mone to buy with. v The Herald's bst that the Demo-crat- s will hold their own in Sevier county is an insult to a people who are intelligent enough to vote for their ; own interests in a campaign where all the issues are freely debated and every man knows what he is about. We expect a Republican majority In Sevier county because the logic of the1 situation demands it. . IN SEVIER COUNTY. The leading Democratic newspapers in various parts of the countryhave published simultaneously an elaborate biography of their presidential candi-date, Grovkb Cle eland. This biography has been very care-fully prepared for the purpose of mak-ing votes for the ponderous prophet of Buzzard's Bay. Speaking of his ser-vice as assistant district attorney in Buffalo in 18G1, his biographer says: During his term in this office he was so busily engaged with the duties of it that when he was draitt d as a soldier he ould not leave his work to , enter ih army, and sent a eurs'itute instead. Here wc have it from the best Demo-cratic source that when his country's life was assailed Gsover Cleveland whs "so busily engaged" with the duties of the petty office of assistant district attorney that he "sant a substi-tute instead!" Where was Bex Harrison at that time He held the more important place of supreme court reporter in Indiana, but he was riot "so busily engaged" that he had to send a substitute to represent him at the front. He hjjmg the stars and stripes from his ofE window. He went out into the stret8 and urged his fellow-citizen- s to enlist. His raised a regiment of fighting patriots. He studied tactics an ltd 'his regiment to the front. Hs Ahlgnt; like a demon on the field of "ork'teaj an epeix;tid lro l"BhtinK yj Hookeb the memorable compii-- , v;, "Ben Harrison, for this day's iork I'll make you a brigadier." WhSvould you rather trust at the head ot this nation, the brave Bin Harrison, or th9 discreet Grover Cleveland, who thought more of hU hide than h';3 country? WHEN THE NEWS V AS HOT, . Vthe Times won the tlitinction last night of carrying the first feport of the great light at New Orleans to the ex-cited throngs who crowded the streets and public places oiSalt Lake. Before the cheers of Corbett's sur-prised admirer had died awav the bugle tones of a crowd of newsboys, crying "Extra Times, full account of the fight," filled the air, and papers Went like hot cakes in every direction. This fact will attract attention throughout the country. Blair is at once the most serious and the most laughed-a- t public man of our times. As an advocate of national prohibi-tion, woman suffrage and a magnifi-cent educational system, he has been caricatured and paragraphed almost out of existence. And yet behind Henry W. Blair tands a great, compact army of earnest jnen and women, who hold hira in affectionate esteem and who will raise statues to his memory after he is gone. To these people Blair in the senate Vaslike Cbarle3 Sumner to the Abo-- v " litionists a brave and fearless cham-pion, suffering contumely and ridicule for their Bake, but sure of a place in history'. Blaik is much misunderstood, but the great numbers of people whom he stands for have a right to be represen- - ted in conjreis, and so we hope he will tie electeA.' Dellaqnent Notice. EDWIN DOWDEN, Secretary Himslya Mining Company. THE RECEDING TIDE- - The latest news in the field of politics is that the Liberal party of Sevier county has declared that the war is over, and the time come when good citizens should affiliate with national parties. The process of disintegration is going on all over the territory and there will soon be no Liberals, except in Salt Lake county. What is the attitude of this remaining Spartan band? The vast majority of the people of Utah desire to forget the past and pro-ceed at once with the work of building an American commonwealth. They want to discuss the issues that interest American citizens in every other state and territory. They believe that this s the true road to peace and develop-ment for Utah. The little band of men ia this county who still cling to the third party are blocking the way of progress. To the extent of their influence they are keep-ing alive the old animosities. Many men who agreed with them yesterday are marching in the procession of prog-ress today. Most of the men who voted with them in the outside counties-throug- h all the years of the past, and who enjoy the best possible opportu-nities to study the motives and pur-poses of the mass of the people of Utah, say the time has come for this terri-tory to be like all other American com-munities. Is it not plain that the time has come to nationalize our politics and to work together for the realization of all our possibilities? May not tbe Liberals of Salt Lake trust the judgment of the Liberals in Sevier, who know the plans and pur-poses, the motives and ideas that rule our population as it cannot be known here in this more modern community? CORBETT AND SULLIVAN- - It was amply demonstrated in every eity of the United States last evening ! that whatever may be said about the i brutality of prize fighting, a struggle "between giants for the championship of the world compels the attention of all classes of the public. The Uttle ia over and Corbett talcei SuLLiViN's place as the champion of the world. The pride of his friends in wonderful schievement will be Vthis by the public generally all over Padfio coast, to which Corbett be- - f v longs. He has won his honors fairly r and proved that he was a better man last night . than the old Boston ' champion. When Corbett comes to Salt Lake, as he will do Bhortly, he will receive a reception that has the element of local pride for its basis, i. What of Sullivan? For ten years V ke nss stood with his face to the whole world and an open challenge on his lip,. Men who praised him yesterday V 6coff at bim todaj', because the world j has no pity for the loser in any walk of life. The world always cheers for the winner, and the great fighter who won the championship ten years ago, and kept it until the twenty-firs- t round of ?f VH Jattle, is today so low that . any briy of the afreets may scoff at him. Nevertheless, thV historical fact is that Sullivan was Wie greatest fighter of his day, and that iVe has yielded at last to a man who is betfer than he is now. Corbett has honestly won the laurels that Sullivan honestly won be- - i fore him. THK DISTRICT COURT IN AND FOR INthe Third Judicial district of Utah territory, county of Salt Lake. V. G.
