Show BANK WRECKER SUICIDES. Collins of the Uefutict klanks of Sun Oieuro, Oil., and Cheyenne, Wyo., Blows His Brains Out. San Dikgo, Cal., March 4 This community com-munity was shocked yesterday afternoon by the suicide of J. W. Coliins, president of the defunct California National bank, iielunched with Ceiicral Murray and Altorney-ticneral Hart, and, alter leaving them, went directly to his room and tired a hullei iuto iiis brain. He has been under great menial strain for some time. About two years ago ills entire family were drowned In the bay, and now that he was financially ruiued, and with a charge of embezzlement hanging over him, it is thought he was brought to a point where he considered he had nothing to livo for. Collins came to San Diego from Cheyenne, Chey-enne, Wyo., where he was interested in a bank, which also failed recently. Collins is reported to have been called many years ago to Cheyenne by M. E. Post from bis Pennsylvania home to enter Post's bank. The latter was elected to congress in 18110, and iu his absence Collins is said to have run the bunk iu his own interest, and on Post's return demanded a partnership. On being refused, he funned another bank, and subsequently circulated reports reflecting reflect-ing ou Post's bank, thereby causing a run, which broke it. It is now ascertained that both Collins and Dare came to San Diego with comparably little money. Receiver Pauly has received orders to push the collections for the California Cali-fornia bank. It is expected a receiver will be appointed iu a day or two for the Savings Sav-ings bank. Attorney General Hart says the Savings bank hud but ?ti2o iu cash, but the books showed 227,000. .a- |
