Replying to a query of General Enoch, congressman-elect from Ohio, ns to why there was not a uniformity in the answers to his calls for the status of pension claims, Commissioner llaum has written General Gen-eral Kuoch a lengthy letter pertaining to the settlement uf claims in the pension pen-sion bureau. In the letter Commissioner Commis-sioner Kami) states that be is doing all he can to secure the prompt adjudication adjudica-tion of all claims. On tho 1st of July there, were Ml), 737 claimants who never had been pensioned pen-sioned and 3'.i.),i;m; claims for an increase, in-crease, making a total of (.IJII.4 '(i pending pend-ing claims. 1'lie bureau is doing its best, hut it is practically impossible to bring all these cases to nn immediate 'settlement. Tho new claims aro, to a great extent, given the precedence over the claims for an increase. In addition to the letters of inquiry, etc., from members of congress, the ollice last year received over 170.(1(10 communications from claimant", their friends and altoruevs, inquiring regarding regard-ing their claims. The communications poured iu at the rate of more than 38.10 per day. 1 ho receipt of every one of them was acknowledged, but it is physically phys-ically impossible to at once givo tho status of cases to which they relate. Some are reached more readily than other., which accounts i'or the fact thst ileiicito replies to some letters are received re-ceived in a shoi ter space of time than others.
