A special from lel Uio, Texas, says that a daring train robbery was coinruiUed at that place shortly after midnight last night. All the money and valuables in the j express car safe were secured by the ; robbers, as well as several sacks of mail : nnd registered packages. The robbery occurred at Samuel, TeT., a small station on the Southern I 1'acitie, located in a thinly settled tec-j tec-j tiuu a few miles from this place. The aobhery was committed by six masked men shortly after midnight mid-night last night. i'ynamite and Winchesters were used as a means of intimidating- the express messenger and gnining an entrance into the car. The amount of monev obtained cannot be learned but it will doubtless reach into the tens of thousands. The train was just pulliug out from the station when six marked men, who hail selected their positions, simultaneously simulta-neously mounted the engine and the mail and express car. Over forty shots woro fired. literally perforating tho baggage and express ear without injury to any one, when a dynamite cartridgo was exploded against a small window iu the express car. Tho effect of this was to tear tho window out and otherwise damage the express ear. The express messcner was stunned but he recovered iu a few moments, only to be overpowered by the robbers and luailo to give up the safe key. The train was delayed several hours. The robbers took their time in doing tho job and with the utmost coolness aud an exhibition of irreat nerve. Horses were iu readiness for them and on the completion of their work the bandits rode rapidly away and are now in Mexico beyond tho reach of the authorities. |
