While drilling out a hole on the Irene mine, about threw miles from Silverton, a minor named Thomas Nelson was fa-tally injured. Tho shot exploded, blowing oif his left hand and injuring him internally. Juho. Dnuobue, a tailor, was arrested at Grand Junction for beating his wife. Friday night three men overpowered the jailor in charge of the city lockup, took the keys and took Douohue, lock-ing up the jailor. That was the last seen of Douohue. His present where-abouts are a mystery. It is not known whether his liberators were men who had beoome disgusted with his brutality tmd who gave him gome of his own medicine and drove him out of town, or were friends who knew what would befall him if ho ever came into court and took this means of gutting him out of jail and out of the country. The officers believe the latturto bo the case, and that he is no pu.ting the miles between him and Grand Junction as rapidiy as he can. On Sunday last quite a number of milling men from Tarryall got together in Como to consider the question of purchasing a stamp mill for operation in Tarryall mining district. Otto Couley, a member of the Lead-vill- e drum corps, which accompanied Garlield l'ost G. A. K. to Detroit, died in that city. W. T. Asliloy of Saguache made a second shipment of fat cattle last week to Uasley Co. of Leadville. Thirty-riv- e head were shipped, aud the average weight was VIM pounds. The price was 3 cents per pound; cattle weighed at MotTat after twelve hours gaunting. A previous shipment of thiity-thre-head averaged 1219 pounds. These cattle, with 11") more, have been feed-ing on Hacca grant during the past eighteen months. Mr. Ashley expects soon to clean out all his fat cattle. The Alamosa mill and elevator runs merrily on, aud the immense demand for the flour calls for still greater ex-pansion of its capacity. The latest ad-dition is a big warehouse connected with the elevator and the switch, whose dimensiins of tMSxloO feet will be able ta take in every consignment of our farmers. A most terrilic thunder storm passed over F'ort Collins last week, devastat-ing many of the finest crops in north-ern Colorado. The lightning struck the cupalo of the Larimer county court house, doing but little damage. It also struck one ef the tros at the college and F. F. IV Scott's house, with no in-jury more than to leave the cellar with-out plaster. The rain camo down in torrents, and tho streets were almost impassable. The second crop of alfalfa was on the ground ready for stacking. The loss will probably be very great. Larimer countv farmers boasted of one of the largest alfalfa and wheat crops In the slate. Governor Koutt has informed the authorities of l'airp'y that he cannot, nn the part of the state, offer a reward for the conviction of the murderers of Andcrsou and I'etersnn, for the reason that such reward would have to be paid, if at all. out of the general appropria-tion fund, which fund is already drawn down to thn limit. The North Fork Fruit Growers' assoc-iations at !tdt has shipped lli.Tll pouu.ls of fruit in one ween. Outside shipments at the least calculation wiil swell the list to 'J 1,000 pounds. - FOUND FLOATING. The moon is a guide to the various resorts thrsu uights and lots of young pcoplo know it too. Too rapid multiplication of second-hand stoves in the city indicates that there is no monopoly in that direction. Tho American hoif, it is understood, is still excluded from France. When Frenchmen come to Salt Lake they are disguised as tourists. Does the average Salt Lake man know that the ditleaence between Rus-sia leather shoes and russet leather shoes is about $11 a pair? Bathers at Garlield do not have to seek a spot for a plunge free from gar-bage, as is the case at Coney Island, Htw York's great resort. Don't forget death lurks in dynamos used to run fans and milk shakes. There was a funeral in Now York the other day becauso a man monkeyed with a dynamo. The man who stood on the rear plat-form of a Salt Lake City street car aud dropped a quarter to tho ground and got oil and secured it proved to be a real smooth cusser. A certain hotel man west of Main streot is so sure that more people ate at his tables last week than at any other one bouse in this city that he is willing to bet a suit of clothes on it. The preliminary work of renovating and improving Wonderland ou Weai Second South ii evidonce that the man-agement is preparing to allord the pub lie a big entertainment for a dime. lie was an Ogdeu swain who re-marked as he and his sweetheart stopped in front of a soda fountain: "I don't care a darn for expense, what kind of scont will you have, SailieV" There will be a great assemblage of typical westerners at the irrigation congress in Salt Lake next month. The majority of them are silver advocates who get on their metal and stay there. These are the days when country friends fetch baskets of fruits to their Salt Lake acquaintances. Druggists, doctors and undertakers are entirely favorable to this manner of remem-brance. More petty jealousies exist today among the managers of Salt Lake ho-tels than any other class of men. To see a bus with a new arrival pass their doors for another hostelry almost throws the observing host into a tit. "Those houses look like ones in Omaha," said a girl from that city as a Rapid Transit car carried her past Per-kins' addition last evening. Salt Lake City has some of the finest residences to be found anywhere and visitors are not slow about saying so. Oh, how beautifully the mountain breezes tempored the atmosphere in this valley yesterday. Reports from eastern cities record sunstrokes, baking of apples on trees and in some places a suspension of business. The tempera-ture here at 11 a. m. yesterday was 70 degrees. !Stl riolh riin.trphi.
