Show A DEMOCRATIC COXSPIKACY. . The "Mk-higanizing" of Ohio and Iowa depends on the result of tomorrow's tomor-row's election, and if the democrats are successful the infamous scheme carried out in Michigan last winter will be per-trated per-trated in those two states. This new democratic conspiracy was organized in Ohio nearly two years ago. A bill was introduced in the last legislature legis-lature to change the mode of electing presidential electors from a general ticket, as now required, to congressional congression-al district. It was not acted on, however, how-ever, because the democrats did not want to be burdened with the infamy of the scheme during the present campaign, cam-paign, and because they knew the same end could be accomplished by the legislature legis-lature to be chosen tomorrow, if it has a democratic majority. Under such a law, and with the present democratic gerrymander of the Ohio congressional congres-sional districts, the state would give fourteen of its twenty-three twenty-three electoral votes to the next democratic presidential candidates, even if there was a republican majority major-ity of 12,000 on the total vote of the state. The same" infamous scheme has taken firm root in Iowa. Governor Boies has taken occasion to declare that he does not sympathize with any such movement but that goes for nothing. noth-ing. It is known that a plan has already al-ready been perfected by which Iowa, if the democrats are successful, can be gerrymandered so that under the Michigan plan it can be made to give at least eight of the thirteen electoral votes to the democrats; and Governor Boies' campaign pledges will stand for nothing against the plans of his party. |
