Show .V ACCIDENT AT RICO. One Man was Killed and Another.Serionsly Injured iu the Silver Glance. RiCO, Colo., Dec. 22. A serious accident happened at the Silver Glance mine Sunday which resulted in the death of Barney Muud, Billy Munn, Ins partner, being in a fair way to recover. The two men were working in a shaft ut a depth of about 200 feet from the surface. Just before going to lunch in the morning they lired a deep shot, and upon their return to the shaft their candles went out when they were about ten feet from ths bottom. It was soon discovered that the shaft was full of carbonic acid gas. Dunn shouted to his partner to give the signal to hoist but as he did so Mund fell from the bucket, hnving become suffocated from the gas, Dunn managed to give three signals, which meant that a mau waa on the bucket. The fourth bell, or signal to hoist, not being given, the engineer concluded that something some-thing h:ui happened and immediately raised tho bucket to the surface. Dunn, being unable un-able to speak, tho men on top wcro In a quandary to know just what had happened, roreiuan Berger immediately mounted the bucket and started down, but tho gas was so sirong that all efforts to recover Mund's body were futile until a mesatuger was sent to town for hose, waieh was attached to a steam-pipe and the gas torced out of the shaft, rendering it possible for Berger to remain re-main long enough to place Mund's body in the bucket. |
