Show THE TEMPERANCE MEETING. Xlia Goofl Work lt,i,Lua Kv.ryloijr In-Tlt-J to ba Prt-.uiit T,mi(;lil. Tlie gosjiol temperance inciting in the First Presbyterian church was opened last uiglit by singing "Jesus is Calling." and "We're Marching to ion." Rev. Dr. McNiece offered prayer. Mr. Woodford, the lecturer, read paris of this sixth chapter of Ga'.atiatis, aud based h.s remarks u them. Mr. Woodford spoke of tho effectiveness of of newspapers announcing temperance meetings. Ho said the papers carry the facts of what was said and done at tho meeting into homes and thus it is read by men who never attend such gatherings. There are men under the power of drinl: in this city whom it would pay to square up accounts that they might see how they stand. The reason why the pews of this church are not full tonight is because the men and women are afraid to square accounts It seems to me that drink gets its heaviest blows on the women. I used lo think that women if they would remain at home inst 'ad of fighting the tcmperauceques-lion tcmperauceques-lion thoy would be in their proper place. At the same time the men were trying to destroy those homes. Today I am so earnest respecting the matter of re formalbn that I am with the women from prayer to conspiracy against the saloon. The women have made more, effective stir en this question than nil the men ntid their organizations combined. com-bined. The preacher or teacher who is a moderate drinker is soon dumb as a m'imtny on the temperance question. When approached he says he is for temperance but not for total abstinence because there may be a saloon keeper or two in his church. One ol the chief troubles of tho times is tho church has not been strong enough in tho way of total abstinence. If 1 could get every man in fialt Lake who is a member of some church to sign the piedgo for total abstinence wo would have the greatest revival held between this city and tho coast. A man may deceive his home, his friends, his preacher, but he cannot deceive his God. Total abstinence means protection to homo, childhood and manhood. Outside of the church the W. C. T. (J. is the best friend a man has. Mr. Woodford recited numerous instances of personal experiences and observations which made his talk highly entertaining. He wilt speak at the same place to-night. Take a friend with you anil hear facts fit for all men. |
