Of all the paintings by Clement, tbis of tha favorite of thu harem is the tinest. and has in all exhibitions ex-hibitions taken the first rank. The subject is a familiar one to students of eastern life and customs, lieautiful women have always been the passion of the hot-blooded lords and rulers of the countries where the sun shioes for all times. 'these women are often selected from the natives of the Caucasian mountains in Asia Minor and also from thu Georgians. While they ure really captives cap-tives to their lords their lives are not bard one as to physical comforts. They are surrounded by every luxury that wealth and power can secure, and beyond loving and sleeping have very little to do. In the painting the beauty is sleeping, having grown tired o"f stringing flowers, She is watched by her dusky maid and the grim Musta-pha, Musta-pha, whose cigarette glows as brightly as his eyes fixed upon the maid. To appreciate ap-preciate this great work it must be seen Language cannot illustrate its beauty, its value is $15,01)0, and is on exhibition at the Council saloon, 13 Commercial, street, where Mr. Harney Tibbals invites the public to view it. |
