Show THIS IS SOUND SENSE Time That the Solid Citizens of Salt Lake Were Repudiating the Infer-ior Infer-ior Buildings Now Erected. SOMETHING DURABLE WANTED. How This Class of Houses Has Been Erected at the Expense of People Compelled to Occupy Them. Editor Timks: Is it not time that tho permanent citizens of Salt Lake City should make a vigorous effort to maintain main-tain the good reputation of the city, by emphatically condemning the shoddy and inferior class of buildings that are now being erected. If the past experience experi-ence of that class of buildings erected in Los Angeles, Wichita, Denver, Ta-coma Ta-coma and the various booming towns, has taught us nothing, there will be no help for us except for sad misfortune to awaken us into reason. Let us see how those hypocritical shells are erected and if they are any advantage to a city or permanent home-soeker. Some Shy-lock Shy-lock gains the confidence of eastern capitalists. Ho immigrates to some prosperous city; he soon b'nds some genial companion who is an expert ex-pert at slashing up those wind breaks. For example, they get up plans for a cottage and estimate cost at per days wages at top prices. Shylock sends plans and cost at an advance 011 estimate esti-mate east for approval. .Now, says Shylock to the expert, "Slasher, you sub and piece this work out and all that you can cut under the price allowed I will give a per cent or divy with you as the case may be, and as a rule those slashers are possessed with such an infinitesimal in-finitesimal soul that if the current price for picking blackberries, was five cents per (mart, they would jew their blind grandmother to one penny per quart. The agent and Slasher get good pay, outside of their per cent they steal jewing the mechanics below living prices. Mechanics, thus depressed, feel disposed, dis-posed, and in necessity are compelled, to slight their work in every conceivable conceiv-able way in order to eak out a miserable miser-able existence. Hence you get a class of buildings that are a curse to any city. They are neither lire, water or wind proof; nothing but a diabolical phantom to the unsophisticated purchaser, pur-chaser, not worth 10 per cent of cost on raw material; not a lit tenement for exiled ghosts. Homeseekers should evade such erected er-ected fabrics as they would a cholera infested region. T have a house erected er-ected by good mechanics you will save in fuel and repairs in a few years w hat the work costs, and enjoy some comforts and foul safe in a gentle autumn aut-umn breeze. When we call on our permanent citizens citi-zens foraid for public improvements for the general good of the city. Where is the Shylork and general slasher slash-er Echo answers where. They have left Tocnma, Los Angeles, Witchita, Deuver and are now hanging to Salt Lake like mistletoe to a tree full of life and sap. They will soon suck what vitality they can, then drop and crawl oil like a leech. Very respectfully, 11. V. C'UKKY. |
