N Y One August day in 1034 1934 something went wrong with wilh his lucky star Sam Is a and on that August day he was working as usual It was about aboul 1 o'clock in the afternoon and his truck was parked at atthe atthe atthe the curb in town mid Manhattan As he sat sal there In the drivers driver's seat seata a young man came over to him The young fellow was In his early twenties and neatly dressed He said he had a job that he wanted Sam to lo do That Thai job was to pick up three trunks at al a house on West Wesl Eighteenth street and deliver them to the Pennsylvania station Just a Job of Trucking The young fellow looked all right to Sam and there was no reason why he should suspect anything Sam didn't have any large amount of money on him and there was no other reason he could think of why anyone should want to harm him In fact Sam didn't think about the matter mailer at all It was just another job and he went about It as hed he'd go about any other I The young lad asked Sam his price and Sam told him it would be three bucks The young fellow tellow said All right and they started off oft They got to the Eighteenth street address which proved to be a Do furnished house and both of ot them went Inside As they entered Sam went first and the young fellow followed They climbed a flight of stairs and turned into one of the rooms on the second r I W I J LU r m L I The Man Pointed a Gun at Sam floor As Sam went In the In-the the door closed behind him Then out from rom behind that door stepped a masked man a slouch hat pulled down over the upper part of his face pointing an automatic pistol Tied Him Up but Wouldn't Explain The man pressed the gun against Sams Sam's side He J lIe He told Sam to keep quiet The pair of them them the the masked man and the young fellow lellow who had hired him to move trunks trunks began began tying him up They bound his hands and feet with wire wire put put a towel over his mouth Then the them masked m man went out leaving the young fellow ellow to stand guard over their prisoner I It was all too much for Sam What did these birds want Did I they expect to get gel any money out of him Then hen they were going to be disappointed Sam didn't have any great amount of money I Inot fm 4 not not enough anyway to pay a gang of kidnapers for the terrible tc I risk they were taking Did they have the wrong man Well I that might be a possibility He tried to talk to his captor The young fellow wasn't very com corn I When Sam suggested they had the wrong man he smiled I in a way that suggested that he knew what he was doing Sam discarded that wrong man theory An hour dragged by and Sam began to wonder wonder won von vonder der again All sorts of ot questions filled his mind It wasn't w alone the problem of ot why they wanted him There was also the question of ot what they might do with him He lIe began to wonder if his family would next hear of ot him when he was dragged out of the river or his body found stuffed in a trunk on a dump somewhere on the outskirts of the city Such things have happened Sam had never thought of ot them happening to toI I him But now he h was beginning to Wanted His Truck for a Robbery Another hour passed The young lad who was guarding him was decent enough lie He kept his gun out and pointed at Sam but he lie didn't harm him bim Once he even lit a cigarette and held it to Sams Sam's lips so he could have a 1 smoke Sam felt a 1 little better belter after that thai A third hour passed Then the other man came back The two ot of them began to untie Sam When they had taken the wire vIre from his hands and feet they told him to lie down on the bed for ten minutes After that they went out locking the door behind them As soon as their footsteps footstep's had died away Sam was vas on his feet bang bang- banging banging banging ing on the door After a few ew minutes the landlady came and let him out He left that house and walked down the street still puzzled about the strange adventure that had befallen him He went to the police police- station to report the loss of his truck truck and and there he got the answer to his mystery It was the simplest thing in the world That pair of crooks just wanted to rob a dress goods house down on Bleecker street And they had held Sam a prisoner so he wouldn't report its loss until after they had finished the job The cops found his truck the next morning aban aban- abandoned abandoned abandoned down on Delancey street streel streett 1 t Copyright Service |
