Natural Gas ai a Destroyer of the Germs of Various Diseases Which Lurk Throughout the World. The filing of articles incorporating tho American Natural Gas company of Salt Lake City, with a capital of .V 000,000, has created a stir in business I circles. A number of the gentlemen who have attached their names to the papers are practical people in tho business busi-ness of natural gas. One of tho cor- porators is Mr. S. C. Constant of l'cru, Ind., whose experience is of value. Mr. Constant has, since his arrival in this city, given tho local matter much thoughtful consideration and investigated investi-gated tho ground thoroughly. As far as he has been ablo to ascertain, no depth of 1201) feet has beeu reached with the purpose of striking natural gas as an object, lie said to a Times reporter: "Tho exterior indications in tho vicinity vi-cinity of Salt Lake are excellent for the presence of gas 0 11. Trenton rock means gas and the local signs lead 111 e to believe that this rock can be reached at a depth of nbout 1000 feel. In Indiana In-diana and Ohio g;is territories Trenton rock is struck from 800 to i:J00 feet. "The American company will begin drilling iu a few days. The machinery to be used nt the start is now on the ground. The surface gas now oozing will be utilized to operate the drill and thus save the cost of fuel." "1 'lease explain how the gas will be brought to the city?" "If the gas is brought to Salt Lake a main pressure pipo will surround tho whole city. The pipe will be connected with the wells and provided with safety blowolTs, thus relieving all possibilities of explosion. The high pressure pipe will always bo tested with double tho capacity of the city. All lines leading from the high pressure pipe to privote dwellings, shops aud factories will be conducted on the same principle. Each place is to be regulated with its own LlowoQ's and shutuft's so that at any time a dwelling or factory can be cut off for repairs without interfering with tho main line." "How will the gas be regulated?" "Natural gas is regulated by what is termed a mixer which is placed before the blaze. Stoves used in residences usually call for a No. 3 mixer which has power enough to heat lrom five to seven rooms. A No. 7 mixer will run any engine boiler in Salt lake at one-fourth one-fourth the expense of coal." "What amount of danger is associated associ-ated with natural gas?" "The only danger that may arise from the use of natural gas is in the question of plumbing. All of the work in this line will be subject to a rigid inspection in-spection by the territorial inspector. '1 he mains and lines leading from the principal pressure pipes will be required to stand double the pressure. No gas will be turned into a pipe until the plumbing has been passed upon by both the company and territorial inspectors. All consumers will be compelledtosign articles of agreement with theoreani-zation, theoreani-zation, which are to be functioned by the territorial inspector, to agree to tho rules of tho company in respect to the use of gas and mixers." "What effect does natural gas have upon tire insurance rates where it is used?" "The risk by lire in the city of In-diauapolis In-diauapolis where natural gas is used extensively has fallen one-half and insurance in-surance rates accordingly. The same is true in all towns in Indiana and Ohio. All iusurance companies in these states issue extra permits covering natural gas consumers and they are only too happy to do so as it cuts their risk down. Fully one-third of the gas consumers con-sumers are taking individual risks on their own properties from the insurance companies. This shows the conlidenoe people have in the oas. No smirks enm from its use and it is safe. The cry of dunger is raised by tho insurance companies. com-panies. The lirst accident is yet to occur oc-cur in Indiana where consumers have complied with tho rules of the various natural gas companies. The medical fraternity of Indiana and Ohio speak highly of this gas as a destroyer of the germs of various diseases. In regard to asphixiation not one-half the danger is associated with natural gas as there is with the manufactured article now used in this city. "The business of natural gas is yet in its infancy. From experiments and observations the gas manufactures itself it-self in the Trenton rock. This is shown after a well has been rested by the increased in-creased force with which the gas issues. The supply in Indiana despite all that has been consumed is as good as ever and care is taken that none of the wells are over taxed." |
