Talker of the Indian department was in the city yesterday, on his way to Washington county, whero he will give his attention to corivspondeueo looking to the main-tenance and protection of tho Shebils Indians. Tho voyage is the result of correspondence between A. W. Ivans of St. (leorga and lion. John T. Caine; in which the former states that tho present reservation was not capable of furnishing them with support. In lieu of this they began to kill cattle ami after a number of tho guilty ones were convicted and Imprisoned they desisted. This spring they called in Mr. Ivans and said they were unable to farm any longer for tfia reason that they were without tools and implements. They then went into the mountains and of the slaughter of cattle are ar-riving daily. I'nless immediate! steps bo taken to correct this slaughter it will be checked in bloodshed between tho Indians and ranchmen. Mr. Ivans 'recommends their removal to a good body of land on the Santa Clara, some fifteen miles from St. Ceorge. whero there is abuiidaut grass ai;i smno game. California Oollatnral Hank. Big bargain In diamonds and watches at 1 W. Second South. DISTRICT COURT. Tho Criminal Calendar Kiupenda and the Mills Oprn the Civil. That august automata adjudging be-tween meum et tuum having adjourned after it led them through the haunts of crime in all its shapes and varieties having adjourned, the criminal calen-dar in the district court has been prac-tically cleared up, und his honor, coun-sel aud client are ushered upon the dry and almost measureless expanse of civil piocedure. The recent solstice in the continent of crime has been one of the most eventful that has been experience In local courts. It has at least been productive of a volume of lessous for tho lawless, and whilo on occasions the penalty may have ap-peared severe it was met by mercy whenever the circumstances justified. It has retired the bigamist to the soli-tudes of the cell and placed so high a tariff upon the unlawful gratifica-tion of lust as to thrust it beyond the range of average speculation. It has again staggered the disciples of polyg-amy and adultery with well directed blows, and has put a score of crooks, includiug burglars, sueak thieves and garroters beyond the reach of the household arsenal. But one homicide was brought to its attention, and the doubts, the fears in that case made am-ple justification for the single year that was imposed on Charles Wyman. The firebug whose fiendish impulse was gratified in the midnight blaze that swept over Bountiful at a total cost of $J8,000, was given a year. This the public criticized as rather shadowy punishment for one of the most heinous crimes in the calendar. But then the sapient public is not as capable of weighing the testimony as the righteous judge who analyzes every svllable and puts every scintilla in the sensitive balance. There was but one train wrecker, and through the un-erring vigilance of tho engineer and fireman he failed to wreck. It was no fault of his, however, and the full ex-tent of the penalty would have been judicial leniency. And in this connec-tion it may be well to men-tip- n that the officers who brought the skulking wretch to justice have not yet been rewarded or had the actual costs of their expedi-tion refunded to them. Rather a palo-ri- c quality of gratitude. These are the principal offenses that were ventillated and in tho whole session was one of the most interesting that have taken p ace. The remainder of the term will be devoted to civil matters. Important Notice.
