SpeciaL The centennial cen-tennial anniversary of the birth of Father Matthew was observed very generally throughout the country today,, but now here in so marked a manner as in this city. The early masses at ;th Capuchin church, which the apostlsof temperance heft uncompleted at his death, were largely attended by pious worshipers, who afterwards took part in the similar exercises in his honor,. Barely has there been witnessed in Ireiamt a more interesting demonstration. The peasantry peas-antry from the suiroundinfr country came into the city bearing flags and headed by brass bands discoursing patriotic pat-riotic airs. The procession was the largest seen here sine the days of O'ConneU. It was headed by the mayor, who wore his full robes of offisa ami who was accompanied ac-companied by tha members of the council. There were also many of the nationalist mem hers of parliament pres-est. pres-est. After traversing the principal streets the procession halted at th i a-ther a-ther Mather monument, where tae great multitude was addressed by the bishop of the diocese. Father Mathew's church will be completed this year. A member of the Capuchin order who had ben collecting funds in America for the church has Just returned, and the work of dniiiiing tha edifice will be re- j snmeil at once. |
