Eleotrlo Motor for the Galling Guaw The range of uses to which electrio motors hare been put has become so broad that one might easily suppose a limit had been reached and the whole field of possibilities covered, and yet we find almost daily some new purpose to which this most convenient and efficient form of energy may be applied. The latest and decidedly the most novel use of the electric motor is to re-place human energy in the manipulation of the death dealing Uatling gun. The Crocker-Wheel- er Motor company, at the request of the United States navy bureau of ordnance, submitted plans by which the Gatling gun might be operated by electricity, and have just completed a motor attached to the breech of the gun which is a marvelous success.' . It has been necessary heretofore in op-erating these guns to have the services of two men the gunner, whose duty it is to train the gun and drop the shot where they will do the mo6t execution, and also a man to operate the crank which sets in motion the mechanism which causes the balls to hail down upon the enemy. The adaptation of the Crocker-Wheel- er motor not only does away with the services of the latter, but enables the gunner to train and operate the gun; at will by touching an electrio button. , So completely is the Gatling under control of the gunner that he is enabled to fire either a single shot or to pour them out at the rate of 1,200 per min-ute. The London Speaker has been making a study of the heroes who have been introduced to the public in the novels of the recent summer, and has found that the great majority of these men is com-posed of good, tall men, every one of whom is over six feet high, broad in proportion, and of course magnificently knit and gloriously strong. Doubtless this is as it should be, when a novelist is not bent on making merely a psycholog-ical study, and it is also in accord with the present turn for . athletics, long shanks, velocipede compelling, and well grieved in somber or bright lined hose. and, in short, with all the long array of things that enable the shapely young man to show himself to advantage. There was a time when black visaged. surly and soured men, rather under than over the average height, and rather ngly than fine of countenance men like Mr. Rochester, in "Jane Eyre," for example were the predominant type of novel-ists' heroes; but it seems that during the past summer all this sort of thing was swept aside, and the tall and comely hero, bright as the fair god Balder, aud at least an inch and a half longer than Lord Chesterfield's standard gentleman, stepped in and made his bow to the world of novel readers. Wisconsin Pearl Fisheries. Pearl fishing has become quite popular on some of the interior streams in the state, but it is only quite recently that pearl producing clams have been known to exist in the Milwaukee river. It is said that quite a large number of pearls have been taken from this river, but as the finders are very reticent, and will not say just where the clams are to be found, comparatively little is yet known about the discoveries. It is claimed, however, that successful pearling has ' been done near Grafton and Cedarburg Not all clams are pearl producers, and the hunters will be unable to find pearls in many of the clams in the various streams. It may. be well to suggest, now that pearling is likely to become the rage,-tha- t persons who engage ul pearl hunting should avoid destroying any of these different varieties, as well as the kind from which gems are taken, There is no necessity for doing so, as the shells can be opened, the pearls taken out, and the clams returned to the water uninjured, and perhaps ready to begin their work over again. The establishment of a mechanical school is contemplated in Boston, which will admit boys and girls younger than are now received into the Institute of Technology. Albert L. Murdock hat offered the use of five floors in bis hos-pital building on Huntington avenue, and the plan proposed will include prac-tical instruction in stone cutting, brick making, carpentering, etc., besides do-mestic arts and trades for girls. The school will be free to graduates of grammar or high schools, and the idea is to make the instruction so thorough and practical that the pupils can at once se-cure situations on leaving the schools in the branches of trade they choose to take up. .There will be competent di-rectors to oversee each trade depart-ment and plan its progress. It is esti-mated that the annual expense of such a school will be about $23,000, exclusive of rent. The free use of such a suitable building makes the plan feasible. Long years ago he was a not dis-agreeable suitor for the hand of Queen, ' then Princess, Victoria. The wiseacres who ran tho government frowned on the young lord's wooing, and he was given an army commission and packed off to India. He achieved distinction in war, and his love affair was made the subject of a popular ballad beginning as follows: I'D hang my harp on a willow tree, j I'll off to the wars again: A peaceful borne has no charms for me, f The battlefield no pain ; The lady I lov will soon be a bride. With a diadem on her brow. Ob, wky did she flatter my boyish pride Sue's going to leave me now. ' If the face has become roughened by the wind, sponge it often with equal parts of rose water and brandy.
