Show A PLAN THAT FAILED. Stolen Diamonds Mailed hy tiie Thiof to Her Post OllU-e Ilox. Pi nsisi in;, Pa., Aug. 21.-Miss Cora Hamlin boarded at llu: house of Julia Chesswell in Wheeling. On last Taos-day Taos-day she suddenly disappeared, and shortly arter Miss Chesswell discovered that her diamonds had been stolon. Among the jewels was a necklace and pendant, valued at $1200, and several rings. The whole was worth over $201)0. The. Wheeling police were notified, noti-fied, and after a search found that Cora Hamlin had left for Pittsburg. Inspector McAlces was notified aud he sent Detective Shore to the 15. & (). depot, whore Miss Hamliu was arrested as she stepped oil' the train, isho was taken to the central cen-tral police station, where she denied all knowledge of the stolen jewels. She, was searched by the matron, but the jewels were, not concealed about her person nor in her small valise. After detaining her for a day she was sent back to Wheeling, where the police tried in vain to fasteu the theft on iitr. Nothing, however, could be proved. She was to be discharged yesterday, as she had eniploved an attorney to get out. a writ of habeas corpus. Yesterday Assistant Superintendent O'Mara was . notilicd by the postolliee officials that there was a package in a lock box there addressed to Cora Hamlin, Ham-lin, llu went to the, postolliee and ordered or-dered the package, to ho opened. In il were the missing jewels. It appears Cora had evidently carefully planned the robbery. She had come to Pittsburg one week ago and rented a lock box for a month, tin Tuesday, after stealing t ue diamonds, she, went to the Wheeling Wheel-ing post otlice and sent the jewels in a package to herself care of the lock-box. Shu then took a train to Pittsburg, intending in-tending to get the jewels out upon her arrival. She was, however, arrested, aud it is believed that in expectancy of this she sent the diamonds by mail. |
