Show A Cold Brick Swindle. An unusual settlement of a criminal case was effected June 30 in the saperwr . court at East Cambridge. - It was the famous gold brick buna; case which occurred oc-curred in Lowell in 1883, by which two New York swindlers and a local accomplice accom-plice euchred Mr. George F. Pqimininn out of 3,000., The accomplice, named Chester A. Grinnell, was captured, but bis confederates escaped. Grinnell was subsequently released on $18,000 bail, which was furnished by Isador J. and Isaac Klous. When the case was called in court the defendant failed to put in -an appearance. His bondsmen were indicted in-dicted by the grand jury in June, and appeared in court with two .certified checks of $9,000 each, with one of which they offered to reimburse Mr. Penniman and the other they tendered to the court in settlement of the case against them. , Justice Bishop took tho proposition under un-der consideration and rendered his decision de-cision by the following order: . "In the above action the penalty named in the recognizance is adjudged forfeited and judgment entered for $18,-000, $18,-000, the amount stated in said recognizance. recog-nizance. Execution is to be (stayed until un-til July 15, 1890, and shall then issue for said sum, without interest or costs; provided, pro-vided, however, that an acknowledgment acknowledg-ment for the sum of 9,000, signed by. George F. Penniman for account of his claim against Chester A. Grinnell, ono of the defendants, by way of satisfac-. tiou, shall be filed with the clerk of the court in this cause before said day; execution exe-cution shall issue for the sum of $0,000 only."
