With some natures and moods perhaps it is otherwise. The sharpness of the stroke touches no mental spring but that of self concern, but here again it is the wise who learns. For him these evils, for such they still remain, are also the seeds of sympathy with others in like trouble. If he be through any faiut of his own accountable for them, they are in true science as in Scripture the natural recompense of evil, a protest on behalf of needful self control, which he will do well to observe. There is more, therefore, than un apparent tendency to asceticism in this doctrine of disciplinary suffering. Of course, it does not follow that the prosperous and the healthy must at some time undergo this truining by reverses, The same lessons of patience, fellow feel-ing and self restraint can be learned in other ways, and it is quite certain that the daily round and task abound iu op-portunities for such wholesome instruc-tion. We are alike justified, therefore, in admitting for this purpose the fre-quent utility of pain, and in seeking, to the best of our ability, to limit and to destroy by suitable remedies the influ-ence of this otherwise harsh aud hurtful instructor. Health of mind and body and well being of estate ore alone con-sistent with perfect life as ordered by nature's plan and the divine will, and every purpose of training is compatible with their full possession and their proper use. One or the Oldest Musonio Aprons la America Notes. One of tho oldest Masonic aprons in America is owned in Philadelphia. It is of lambskin, about twenty-on- e inches long and nineteen inches wide. The apron and bib has been scolloped all around by hand. In the center of the apron is an artistically portrayed arch, with steps, lights, etc., surrounded by the emblems of the order, with a wreath xjf flowers intertwined. On eachide of the arch, or pedestals, are fig-ures in full Masonic dress, and the pedes-tals bear appropriate inscriptions. On the bib of the apron is the compass and square. It bears the initials of the original owner undue. the flap, as follows: I. A., 1777. The Freemason, of Sydney, New South Wales, says: " 'Ladies' nights' are becom-ing very popular in Masonic circles in England. Lodges give a social, to which ladies are admitted and heartily enjoy the novelty. The idea is a colonial one, as for many years lodges under the grand lodge of Now South Wales have held these socials with great success." There is confusion among the craft lu New Zealand. The assumption of forming a grand lodge by a majority of lodges has caused serious discord. Knowing that unanimity is essential, tho majority should have waited until all the lodges consented to the change. Information from Tasmania carries the inference that a grand lodge has been formed by assent of all the lodges in the province. There are 153,277 affiliated Royal Arch Masons in the United States. New York reports 15,646, the largest capitulur juris-diction in the country. Connecticut has 111 lodges, with an aver-age membership of 239. The Grand Mark lodge of England has over 1,600 to the credit of its three benev-olent funds. It educates thirty-tw- o chil-dren in a home specially provided. Trying to Make flair Grow. One day 1 spokt to my barber about it He said the remedy was sim-ple enough. . All that was necessary was that tho top of ray head should be shaved regularly for about sis months. could wear a toupee, or half wig, and nobody would be the wiser, and at the end of six months my hair would come out strong and always remain so. I went to a wigmaker and asked him if he could prescribe a cure for baldness. He, too, advised shaving the head. That was exceedingly cheering. Two men of science harmonized. "I bought a toupee of the wigmaker. I remember tkat I paid $30 for it Then 1 had my head shaved twice a week regularly. Occasional examinations of the top of my head were not very en-couraging. But flunking that all would be well in time 1 persevered. At the end of six months ( was forced to con-fess that 1 had less hair than 'lefore. Indeed there was no hair at all on the top of my head. Wearing the toupee had kept out the uir and killed the roots. 1 threw the toupee away and philosophically accepted my fate." New York Time SIMMONS. The total disbursements of the benefi-ciary fund during the twenty-on- e years of the order's existence, up to the close of the last fiscal year, amounted to $38,393,816.38. By this amount was paid 14,368 death losses. Some states refuse to admit members by card who have passed the age of 50. Missouri has more lodges of the A. O. U-- than any other jurisdiction.
