Show The Andes Sinking. The startling announcement is made that the Andes are slowly sinking into the earth's cniat. As proof of this La Gazette Geogniphi que says that Quito was 0.C00 feet abovo tho level of the sea in 1745; in 1800 it was only 0,570; in 1831, 9,507, having sunk twenty-six feet during dur-ing the fifty-live years following 1745, and but three feet during tho thirty-ono years which intervened between 1800 and 1831. In 1808 the city's lcvol had been reduced to 0,520 feet above tho level of the Pacific. Pa-cific. To sum up tho total, we find that Ecuador's capital has sunk seventy-six feet in 122 years. Antisana's farm, the highest inhabited spot on the Andes (4,000 feet higher than Quito, the highest city on the globo), is said by the same authority to be 218 feet lower than it was in 1743. |
