Paaa, Am TIio T.yll Eye." ' Belief in the evil eye is very prevalent In western Asia, aa it is iu uorthorn Africa, and even Italy and Spain. Dr. Mashaka, of Damascus, says of those who enter-tain this belief that they think certain people have the power of killing others by a glance of the eye. Others think that it only inflicts injury of a greater or lesser degree. Tho Persians believe that the owner of an evil eye can withor a whole vineyard of grapes by merely looking at them at noon in the dark of the moon. Of this class it is said that "they pick grapes with the eye." The power may rest in one eye only, and many who believe themselves afflicted veil one eye out of compassion for others. Moslem sheiks profess to cure the evil eye and prevent it3 effects by writing mystic, talismanio words on a papor, which is placed in a nut shell and worn about the neck. When a new house is being built the workmen hang up an egg shell, a piece of alum, a donkey's skull, an old root or a pair of boots in the front door, all this to ward off the effects of any evil eye that may look upon the building before it is finished. Moslem women allow their children to go dirty and ragged to keep people from admiring them and thus smiting them with the evil eye. Blue eyes thc-- think especially obnox-ious and only to be counteracted by lustily calling upon Allah. St. Louis Republic. ty LOCAL TAX HALE. to A. B. OfkiiT1 iif iu. It is rjy about ten miles to the top, and I eckoyd t1 could easily make there nd back in a day. Packinff a slight ,Dch I tied it to my belt and started. When I had reached the top and looked ; oyer I was surprised to find the sun list going down. Darkness falls very addon ia this country after sundown, ad I concluded to await the rising of be moon, which I knew would rise soon ftr dark, as it would be dangerous cowshoeing down the mountain side in lie dark, for one could not keep the trail nd would be liable to rush headlong gainst a tree or go plunging over a irecipice. SURROUNDED BY WOLVES. Darkness fell as I have never seen it leforo. Everything was obliterated. I at on my snow shoes at the head of the rail waiting for the light of the moon. ;be silence was oppressive. All around ae I could see the dim outlines of the now capped peaks, dark and somber, caring their heads toward the sky. I oust have fallen asleep, but I awoke pith a start at the cry of a panther com-u-g from a path of green timber a short listance to the left. This was followed ly the cry of a timber wolf, which was mswered by another and another, until ho hills resounded with their weird lowk Soon gaunt shadows flitted from me to tree all around me. Then the iwful thought burst upon me that I was mrronnded by wolves, which at this sea-o- n of the year are very hungry and ierce. If I could keep them at bay until the noon rose I was safe, as I could easily ;eep away from them. As one came ilose I did a very foolish thing. Pulling ny revolver, I shot him through the )ody. With a fearful yell he started to un, the blood pouring from the wound n a stream. He was pounced upon in a ccond and torn to pieces by his s. Crazed by a taste of blood the fhole yelping pack charged upon me. it was growing light in the fast where io moon would soon rise, but was still oo dark to travel with safety; but I teir-ie- d not. Hastily slipping my feet in the leath-rr- s of my snow shoes I started down the iteep incline as if shot from a catapult, itown, down, down into the darkness I rushed at a headlong rate. A gaunt jruto crouching near a tree sprang at ny throat, but he had not calculated on ay rate of speed and passed harmlessly ;hrongh the air ten feet behind me. On :amo the pack, but their cries became liunter and fainter, and I soon began to ido my pole and slacken my rate of ipeed, as I was passing close to the rink of a precipice and soon had a turn 0 make, which one cannot easily do ' S'ith snow shoes twelve feet long. I itopped at the turn to await the rising of i moon, which soon came up, making tashghtasday. ' PLTINO DOWN THE MOUNTAIN SIDE. I believed that the wolves had left to mnt some slower game, but that derat-ion soon suffered a rude shock. Soon fie yelps commenced with redoubled 'try as they scented me, and came closer md closer. I got on my shoes and waited, aothing loath to showing them again iow easy it was to give them the slip. Jn they came, and as they got close I started out once more, but was horrified to find that at this place the decline waa not great enough for the shoes to run themselves. I had forgotten until this time about this place. There was a bench i'oont 500 yards long, and from there tae trail veered to the right and for half 1 mile descended very nearly at an angle t 45 degs.; then the angle was not quite k much, but still very steep, down a trail as straight as a string to my cabin, levsn miles below. On came the howling pack, and knowi-ng it was life or death to get to the iteep decline before my pursuers I bent ivery energy to reach it. As I reached tee turn I could hear their yelps right behind me, and could even hear their aeavy breathing. While I was turning shoes one big brute in advance of the rst reached me, and with a fearful snarl sprang at my head. I stooped, and 18 he went over me I straightened my-Klf-my shoes and started down the steep hill I plunged down with a speed that jio steam could give. Trees hke spectres; looking down the "arrow path it seemed like a plunge to aestroction. My pole snapped like a pipe stem un-8-r the heavy strain, and I bounded for-w-with, increased speed. The world warn before my eyes; trees reeled back rronvmy course with a horrible mght-fca- w weirdness. I. don't exactly er what the next sensation was, I tried to peep out from under the Win of my hat, and it was all a Wnr rocks, landscape were all blended gather in ut undiatingniahable mass. Itaeeined an age, bat it was in fact but Yet7 few moments until my speed be-8-0 to decrease. The momentum was JPng me out onto the "mesa" (Indian vaiteyj. I Mw my cabin dose by. ontba, no pole i could not stop, bo 1 nsagedmy faetfroai my snowshoes ?fd off into a drift, and let the go on. I found them next day X?V7 a mile from there.
