Show A SENSIBLE RAILWAY OFFICIAL . It is the custom with railway officials to suppress every item possible in regard re-gard to accidents. They seem to forget that the railways are common carriers, and are tho creatures of the public, and therefore the servants of the people. The people are entitled to tho fullest information regarding the operations of railroads. The recent action of General Gen-eral Manager St. Johnof the Chicago & ltock Island, in giving to the press every possible facility to got tho details of an accident on that road, is in marked contrast to tho conduct of tho average railway official. Iu fact it was a genuine genu-ine surprise. Mr. .St. John, upon learning learn-ing of the accident, at ouce notified the Chicago newspapers, so that their reporters re-porters could promptly reach the scene of tho disaster and secure a full aud accurate account. Mr. St. John has set an example worthy of Imitation by every railroad bllicial iu this country, and it is Imped that tho seed thus sown will bear good fruit'. |
