Iliitol t (Jnrllalil. The men who are looking ahead and and taking time by the forelock uro awake to the importance of bringing to the attention of Mr. Sidney Dillou, the new president of the I'niou Pacific; rail-way, the importance of considering a new hotel for Garfield beach. Several real estate men art; considering that a resolution by that body requesting Mr. Dillon to consider the scheme in t i mo that the building arrangements may be perfected by early spring would certainly do good. This can b taken up by the Chamber of Commerce and Mining Kxchange, and with resolutions from three such important commercial bodies there is no doubt but that President Dillon would give it his serious atteutiou. A fair presentation of the importance of a hotel at ( iarlleld, both to the citizens of Salt Lake, as well as lo the passenger earnings of the Union Pacilic, receive his consideration a hotel would in all likelihood lie forth-coming. The Union Pacilic, system is so enormous in all its ramifications that Mr. Dillon is liable to overlook the ho-tel question unlo-- s it is properly brought to his notice. Tempermtra llllllard Room. The temperance societies as well as lovers of tho ivory ball game, who are adverse to making this lino sport the contributing factor to the rum shop can take some little, interest in the presence in this city of Mr. Koch, of Millrsburg, ()., whoso father is the principal stockholder of the Commer-cial bank of that city. Mr. Koch's mis-sion to this city is to start a largo bil-liard room, free from the modern at-tachment, a bar. The Folica Committee Locks the Door and Makes An Inventory of Pacta Unearthed. THE SNEAK THIEVES SENT UP. An Antedeluvian Debauchoe Robbed in a Dago Dive- - Round Up Prom the Police. The police committee, whose move-ments and altitudes have been so keenly scrutinized since they began tu ventilate the charges of malfeasance among the linest, were about to sus-pend their deliberations when Mr. Mason came forward and niado com-plaint against .Sergeant Cautlan, whom he charges with conduct unbecoming au otlicer. The complaint alleges that on the occasion of the killing of d Scott bv William Diamond. Cant. lan appeared at his house and was guilty of certain indigni-ties towards a servant girl besides whom In is said by mason to have brushed in a blunt and abrupt manner. Mr. Mason also charges that Cantlau's appearance in his wife's sick room aggraated her condition and that through it she has been rendered much worse. This has added fresh fuel to the flame that has been rising and sinking at intervals for the past week or more, and it threatened to occasion another outburst. That the Vale edition has seen lit to deal so largely in innu-endo has been a source of considerable indignation among the force, each and every one of which have- been made to share the od.uai. They insist that it was the duty ot the complaining party to prefer specific charges, and lo elect the man or men at whom it was direct-ing its venom, and not to have proceeded in a way that has exposed the entire force to calumny. Inasmuch as this has been doue, however, they propose that the public shall have the calcium light turned ou. They propose that competent authority shall lift the mantle and see what lies beneath. ah this in view tho merry war w ill continue and the committee will bo re-queued to nioor the odium at the threshold of those to whom it belongs. For Kohbrry. James Murray and John Smith were telescoped by otlicer Pai ker last even-ing ou complaint of au old man who re-ported that he had been robbed by them of a watch and $3 in coin, at a Hugo dive in the lower part of town. The prisoners were taken to headquar-ters and were searched, but as there was nothing found to indicate that they were the perpetrators tho men were discharged. The lesson will probably teac h the complainant that grey hairs and gin are a dangerous admixture and cause him to retrace his steps. The Clothinic Thlerea. Carrie Delaney and her husband Thomas, Charles Ward and Claudie, on whose bailiwick the recent raid was made by the sleuths, who succeeded in unearthing clothing of the value of sev-eral hundred dollars, aro all serving time in the city jail, whither they were sent by Judge Laney. Carrie was pre- - pntpcl with 1 niecil tieket th'it will nn. title her to refreshments for 110 clays, while Thomas will remain for just double that period. Charles Ward and Claudie, the emotional Claudie, each received 00 dayJ. The Iteast Waj IIi;itecl. A brute who has has been making himself very obnoxious to the youth in the locality of Third South near the school house was captured by the police al I o'clock this afternoon and hurried to the city jail, where ho was locked up to await the wrath of the avenging gods. Attention has been frequently called to his revolting escapades, and as the spirit of reform is thiistiug for materia', his chances for getting the extent of the penalty are very flatter-ing, lie was registered as John Doe. Police Tickings. The police alarm system has been formally turned over to the committee who will report their acceptance to the board this evening. The report emanating from the Yale edition that persons were permitted to cuter the race track on the occasion of the dog tight after it had been decided to arrest tho participants, is possed of about as much integrity as the usual paragraph in that journal. It is de- - nounceit as a malicious prevarication by every ollieer who was ou the ground. The class in boozeology before Judge Laney this morning numbered an even doen, each of whom were fined $5 and costs. W. C. Blumers was arrested last night for disturbing the peace ami awaits his examination. Mike Fadden was run in during the night for obtaining meals under false pretenses. AMUSEMENTS. At Edinburgh the poorer classes still do their weekly lauudryiug as it was done years ago. They convey their washing to the river, dump it into large tubs, and till their tubs with water that has been heated in huge pub-lic kettles. Then the women pull off their shoes and stockings and. holding their skirts well up about their waists, get into tho tubs and tread on the steaming linrn, there-by squeezing all the dirt out of the sev-eral pieces. This is so common a spec-tacle that the natives pay no regard to it nt all, but visitors seem to consider it one of the sights of Edin-burgh, aud but for the ac-t- i ity of the police tlio riverside would be thronged every washday with imper-tinent strangers. Jn the rural parts of Scotland the young women go bare-footed most of the year. On Sundays these buxom dam-sels may lie seen proceeding to church with their shoes in hand and their stocking hung properly over their arms. When they reach the churchyard they sit down on the grass and with moro ease than modesty pro-ceed to don their hosen and shoon, for it would be roearded improper to enter the kirk w ithout these articles of attire properly disposed.
