Tha fiuancial condition in 181)0, of 858 cities and large towns is shown in bulletin No. 14, issued is-sued by the census officials. The general results of the' 858 cities and towns considered are as follows: The bonded debt for 18!)0 shows an increase in-crease of 8 per cent, as compared' with 1880. On the other hand the floating debt has increased 17 percent. . The iu crease in total debt in ten years is 7 per : cent. The amount. invested in sinking i funds has increased 28 per c r.t. During Dur-ing the last ten years 858 cities and towns represented in the returns by reducing re-ducing their debt or increasing their resources, have bettered their condition condi-tion financially to tho amount of $ 15,-777,010. 15,-777,010. Southern cities and towns have increased in-creased their debts by $3,577,348, but increased their resources by 2420.007. Their net increase in debt is $3,156,051. Western cities and towns have also increased both debt and resources. The increase in debtsaniountsto$12,050,078; resources, $11,531,085; net increase of debt, $124,503. C'ties and towns, considered con-sidered in territories, increased their debts by $50,577; resources by $3000; net increase, $47,577. An interesting comparison of tho annual an-nual interest cliarges of different sections sec-tions of tho country is made. In southern states tho rate has increased from 4. IH in 1881 to 5.50 per cent in 1800; in western states it has decreased from 5.78 to 5.50. In the territories it has decreased de-creased from 15.82 to 7.0K,a decrease of 8.72 per cent. The general average for tho United States has fallen of from 5.41 percent in 80 to 4.03 per cent in 1800, a decrease of 0.78 per cent. |
