(SpecialJ-Several eases of a new desease which originally appeared in a northern town immediately imme-diately after the subsidence of tho in-iluenza in-iluenza epidemic, and to which the peo-plo peo-plo gave tho name of "Na noumi" or "falling asleep" have 'occurred here within a week: Persons suffering from this complaint fall into a death-like trance, lasting about four days, out of which the patient wakes in a state of intense exhaustion. Recovery is very slow, but so far no. fatal case has been reported. All the patients who have been seized w ith "Na nouua" had a most sevens attack of influenza during the winter. Dr. Fontana has now under his eare a young man who has been sleeping for twenty days. Ho opens his eyes once each day for a few moments w ithout uttering a word, and immediately imme-diately afterwards is fast asleep again. The youth is reduced to a terrible state of emaciation and is so palu that ho might be supposed to bo dead, except for a slight respiration which is observable observ-able Tho doctor has been commanded to explain his diagnosis of tho strange ease lo tho king. The Italian law requires re-quires that interment shall take place twenty-four hours after death, but owing ow-ing to the appearance of this strange deseaso the authorities havo issued a proclamation informing the people.that if they deem it prudent they need not bury their dead for seventy-two hours. |
