An Immense Crowd at the Tabernacle Delighted With the Singing -- of Home Talent. , An immense crowd gathered at the Tabernacle last evening to inaugurate the opening of the May festival. There were . incidents of interest from the opening of the doors which would till a volume. Tho opeuiug chorus from "Norma," led by Prol'ossor Kent, was rendered in a manner that Salt Lake should be proud of. The singing in chorus of a select number of voices, brought forth from the audience unbouuded applause. Then followed the "Soldiers' Chorus" from "Faust," and tho three hundred voices lent a meaning to the music which awakened new ideas. To Prof. Stephens is duo the credit for tho grand success which attended the singing of tho choruses throughout the entertain-ment. There were some flaws, but these were so seldom as to escape the general lotice, and a reference to ihcm in detail would be deemed invidious. "Jerusalem," as sung in solo by Mr. B. B. Young of Omaha, was received with much approbation. Mr. Young has a baritone voice of groat power and sweetness; Ids notes were so rendered as to make evident that his training and culture have been of tho best method. Miss Lizzie Thomas gave to her lis-teners a sweet vocalization of Verdi's music iu the "Ernani, fly with Me," from the opera of "Ernani." Miss Bertha Bayliss of Omaha was received with applause sufficient to de-light the most approved opera singer. In her rendering of '"Tis Time to Part" she gained the sympathy of her audience at once. Miss Bayliss gave an impromptu selection in response to an enthusiastic encore. The violin playing of Mr. W. E. Weihe elicited great, applause. Salt Lake's admirers of violin playing have reason to be proud over the' masterly stylo of Mr. Weihc. Again Miss Bayliss and Mr. George I). Pyper, in the tower scene from "II Trovatoro" won the hearts of their listeners In a manner most flattering to themselves. Miss Bayliss' voice was at its best, and in the appeal Leonora makes to her imprisoned lover it rang out iu tones of unmistakable moment. Mr. Pyper's response to the singing af Leonora was very sweet iu its delivery. ' Tho absence of Miss Jennie Hawley was severely felt. Much had boon ex-pected from this lady, who is regarded by all Salt Lake as a protege,. A duet by Mr. Easton and Miss Bessie Dean tilled in tho hiatus occasioned by tho absence of Miss Hawley. Verdi's music in the quartette sung by Mr. Eastan, Mr. Goddard, Miss Dean, aud Miss Lizzie Thomas has sel-dom been better'''.iuterpreted. Tho singing of Miss Deitii and Miss Thomas needs no onconium at the hands of a musical critic. Each is superb in tho ralo they assume, and while the splendid soprano of Miss Thomas, entrances her listeners, tho equally beautiful con-tralto of Miss Deau harmonizes so per-fectly as to bewilder those who are lis-tening with attuned ears to the grand melody. The programme'this afternoon was admirably rendered, while that of this evening bids fair to be an excellent one. SALT LAKE CHURCHES, Sunday Services In the Various Houses of Worship. Ho nor his horse was injured, FIGURES J)0N0T LIE And the Following Tell Some Startling Truths Tor the People's Benefit, LOOK AT THE BUILDING EECOED Over $300,000 Worth of Houses Now Being Erected and More to follow. The Times has from time to time given an account of tho building opera-tions of the city, and each week has contained a review of tho principal buildings in course of construction. ' Thus far, however, tho larger struct-ures have been the ones which have re-ceived the greatest attention, but dur-ing tlio past few days tho residence building has been looked up. Hereto-fore there has been a great scarcity of houses, and in fact there is a pressing demand yet, but the people of tho city aro responding to the call and are erecting cottages, dwellings and resi-dences all over the city as fast as ma-terial can be obtained. Subjoined will bo found a partial list of tho dwellings now in course of erec-tion. It is only a partial one and rep-resents perhaps a fraction more than one-thir- d of the legitimate work now going on in that line. Tiik Times will next week produce tho balance of the table. It is no small task to collect these statistics which are among the most important in the chronology of tho town and a building inspectors' record should bo created. The council nvill doubtless see tho necessity for doing this and in its wisdom will make such a provision in tho near future. Until that is done, however, the public can rest assured that Tub Times will attend to its interests. The following is the list: T, A. Chairman of Com. on Cemetery, Hen Butler's Advice to Young Men, All tho improved real estate in the world, as a rule, has paid its interest and taxes and has quadrupled in value during tho past fifty years, while dur-ing the same period 00 per cent of all tho merchants aud traders in that city have failed, and 90 per cent of all tho business corporations have either done likewise or gone out of business, so that their stock has been wiped out. In view of those facts I think it may bo unhesitatingly asserted that nothing else is so safo an investment for small savings as improved real estate. Noth-ing is likely to grow iu value faster. You had, therefore, belter buy a piece of improved real estate, however small, that is paying rent. Pay in cash what little money you have, 'and give your notes, secured by a mortgage on the property, for the balance m small sums falling due at short intervals, and then use all vour extra income from the rent of your property in paving them oil'. You never incur anv risk in discounting your own notes, and when your friends lind that you are placing your money where it' is per-fectly secure, they will be glad to assist you if those notes should come due a littlo too rapidly. Thus iu a short lime, and almost before you know it, you will have a considerable and perfectly safo investment. Edwin W.
