Show Petrified Trees Are Found in Forest Geologists Make the Discovery in Texas In that explored little area sit sit- situated to the east cast ot of the mount mountains in the BIg Bend region of the Rio Grande are the petri- petri petrified fled fied remains of a forest which in extent and size of its trees make the famous sequoias of California mere lilliputians by comparison states a writer in Philadelphia Inquirer The discovery discovery of the rem remains Ins ot of ota ofa a long past age was made in 1927 by Dr Q O 0 Gaither of Fort Worth and S I Cade of Chandler two reputable geologists They came upon the giant prostrate tree trunks and stumps of mammoth size quite by accIdent while on a vacation trip through the almost inaccessible re- re region region gion They later made other visits to the forest and fortified their statements ot of the great sizes ot of the trees by taking photographs ot of them These pictures have been submitted to other scientists some of whom are arc loath to accept the reported dis- dis discovery discovery covery as genuine Several expeditions have gone in search ot of the forest but with the exception of those made by GaIther and Cade none was able to locate it it It is planned by geologists who are members ot of the National Park sur- sur survey survey vey group in camp in the mountains to make a thorough ex ex- ex exploration of the petrified forest and other little known parts of the Big BigBend BigBend Bend In its life lite whIch probably was inthe in inthe the period from to years ago this Ulis tree rose to heights of between 2000 and feet Its trunk is all that remains and the stump Is about 50 feet high This is petrified as are some 15 other smaller ones in the neighbor neighbor- neighborhood neighborhood hood It is rom from 1000 to 1200 feet around the base Fragments of these fallen giants ot of the woods are to be seen everywhere every every- everywhere where One weighs about tons In the valley 92 mlles miles southwest ot of the nearest railroad at Alpine the stumps slumps are arc all that remain of the once mammoth trees The trees have seen volcanic eruptions Nearby one may see the crl- crl crater ter of an extinct volcano and also pumice stones and volcanic ash for tor- formations ma This however has not disturbed the stumps nor mutilated them They are lre clearly defined and one may see the grain ot of the wood and i the knot holes Some of these knot knotholes holes are large enough for tor a man manto to crawl into |
