Show Status of A AA A A Program in Utah I By William Peterson Director Utah Extension Service Constant inquiry comes to this office as to the status of the AAA programs and emergency projects Probably there is no better index as to how this work is progressing than the measure of money act act- actually actually act actually expended to date The agricultural adjustment pro program program gram actually became effective May 12 1933 and with the major major- majority majority majority ity of farmers is more acceptable to date after more than two years trial than when first inaugurated In Utah there thero are three control programs in effect wheat wheat corn corn- log corn hog and sugar beets The unusual precipitation of ot the spring prom prom- prom promises the best production of wheat that farmers have experienced in years The income from sale of wheat added to benefit payments payment will probably bring them a lArger remuneration from wheat than has been experienced since 1929 The Tha opinion of farmers with reference to the wheat program was shown In the recent referendum referendum dum vote in which 1460 farmers voted for the continuation of the program and only vo voted d against it indicating 91 per coat cont favorable When the hog corn program was first inaugurated it did not require a minimum production The pro pro- program program pro program gram at present requires at least leaM 25 per cent base production In Utah the production has assumed almost the minimum allowance In previous years approximately 60 thousands hogs have been market market- marketed marketed marketed ed in the state while in 1934 1034 the number marketed was approximate approximately ly 16 thousand There Is promise of ofa ofa ofa a slight increase for 1935 The control program ram in the pro pro-I pro pro- production pro production of ot sugar beets is not cot in- in interfering In Interfering with the industry The acres allowed permit practically aU all farmers to plant the tho amount requested In all aU three pro programs ms the farmers generally seem to be quite well satisfied The question Is often otten asked HAre Are the tho farmers living ll up to the con con- contracts contracts con contracts tracts 1 To this the answer is yes It might be said further that the specifications in the contracts are bein being lived up to rigidly More responsibility than usual ual has been put upon the county committeemen who are arc responding splendidly In Inthe inthe inthe the administration of ot this program |
