Show r PROGRESS OF A QUARTER OF A CENTURY I f The following article ap appeared un under un- un under under der the above caption in the Moni oni- oni tor concerning the new telephone building in Bountiful The article was contributed contributed b by Angus Sm Smedley lle manager manag-cr of oC the exchange The cut r of the Bountiful Utah exchange c into its new and com com- commodious commodious quarters was vas consummated nt at 10 10 1040 10 p m on the evening of July 20 V H The occupying c of new quarters can be Pe readily compared to toa toa toa a major major o operation ration upon the anatomy ot of the human body bod wherein every vital organ org must be kept functioning that tat life ife or service may not be allow allow- allowed allowed allowed ed to ebb awa away through the neglect neg-lect neglector or lack of precaution of the attend attend- attend I attending attending in ing physicians Uninterrupted ser ser- service ser service ce vice is the watchword d of the tele- tele telephone telo sell phone phone or organization irrespective of whether there thre rr i replacement of plant or 01 of new quarters Service once set up mu must t go on con I continuously con continuously regardless of cost or trouble as the ever calling public i must have incoming incoming- or outgoing outgoing- ser ser- service service ser ser- service vice completed This is because they depend so much on their telephones Our n new budin building was completed for occupancy owing to the shortage e of equipment the Wet West Western West West-cj-n In ern Electric Company was viable unable to supply us with its new three position switchboard Type until early summer which was installed b by L 1 L A L J-amkin J and Carl Bod Bod- Bod of the Western Electric under the direction of E W Boyce Boce The new w ringing machine is an n 1 MS M MS I IS S 3 and is practically noiseless an and works perfectly The whole equip equip- equipment equipment equipment ment office furniture and fixtures are all completely new and md we wo have havea a real setting throughout We are sure surely proud of the way the company has considered d everything for our and comfort We occupied the old building known as the Clipper Block for fOl more than a quarter of a century and we surely became b familiar with the old place The old switchboard was as a magneto type tn e having been built in Salt Lake Lae Cit City and was a real old standby serving faithfully all aU of these years a Nine hundred and md three ninety-three thou thou- thousand thousand thousand sand seven hundred flit fifty toll toU calls have ha been completed and fort forty five forty fi e ol operators have served in handling these connections three of whom were boys who worked as night operators during the ye years years rs 1916 1316 and 1917 Of the lady operators Miss Lily Fearnley served twelve years Miss liss Ll LaVaun Va n Barlow eleven years and a number of others served from five to eight years During this time we have had seven chief oper oper- operators oper- oper operators operators Additional cable has hns been added to the plant the last few months under the supervision of Cable Supervisor Wm Staten Hugh Hug Hyde cable and Albert Gagne helper They finished up the detail of the work just before the final over cut-over which e was completed without a single case of trouble The passing of the old building completed quarter century of tele tele- telephone tele- tele telephone telephone phone history that will be long re- re remembered re remembered as it hadan had an humble beginning be- be be beginning ginning inning on the morning morning- of November November November- 3 1903 with but twelve subscribers and day and evening only Today we weare ve are serving subscribers with every feature of service given in in the larger exchanges exchange |
