Show History Textbooks Largely Responsible for International Enmities By DEAN W F RUSSELL Columbia University The history textbooks of many countries are breeders of international international international enmities It is my impression that there is just about as much hatred about as much suspicion just about as much desire for war as there was in the days before the W World orId war One cannot go from one country to another in Europe Asia or the Americas without becoming impressed with the fact that not only the working people not only the military but people like you JOu and me spend much of their time indulge indulging ing in hate for their neighbors The Ibe teaching of hi history tory under an international code which would be be equally acceptable to all nIl nations is an impossibility The history textbooks must be acceptable to the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution in all countries We must permit old fash patriotism in each country All we can insist upon is that there be no slurs against other people in the histories and that when a na- na nation nation na nation tion like ours derives definite benefits from the cultures and resources resource of other nations we give gi credit for what they have hare contributed |
