Show ONE ESTIMATE OF TODAY'S SCHOOLS The average school turns out "fresh hordes of Ignorant, .unbalanced .un-balanced and uncritical' minds, at once suspicious and credulous, weakly gregarious, easily baffled and easily misled Into monstrous responsibilities " and dangers of this present world," says H. O. Wells, England's brilliant prophet of things to come and author of best sellers in the field of science sci-ence and history. In speech recently delivered at Nottingham, - England, during a meeting of the British association associa-tion for the Advancement of Science, Sci-ence, the criticism made a sweeping sweep-ing attack on modern teaching methods. Undergraduates of today were described as being too Ignorant to be anything but "mere cannon can-non fodder.'' The schools are to blame. Briefly, Wells Bald education should follow an outline. In ten years a student should learn: (1) The development of man, first a study of genus, then race. (2) Children should be taught elementary physics, chemistry and biology. (3) History should be taught records of primary civilization, ignoring history of royal crimes and scandals. (4) Geography should be related re-lated to history and well taught. (6) Students should understand under-stand religion and philosophy that human relationships are understood. un-derstood. Wells said 'following such an outline would help people defend de-fend themselves againBt demagogues dema-gogues ' and false doctrines that "now threaten destruction of civilization." . . |
