while back of this was centered great interest relative to who wh oshall shall represent the state stale in tho the united states senate while the state and county offices were ot of interest alone in themselves to the citizens of the state the question of representation sen tation in congress become 0 of national importance both tile the republican publican Eo arid and democratic Demo crato parties took a deep interest in this question while tho the national republican party through its central committee sin ply looked tor for the party in idaho to do its duty and make of idaho a republican state there wa was no special aid sent in the way of either n money ioney or speakers from the outside fortunately the party possess possessed sed home talent enough to arouse people from lethargy arid and bring out a pretty frill vote veto at the election on the WILLIS SWEET who was elected as representative to congress Is one of the pr prettiest pretties ettles A speakers in the land in voice gesture accent and talent he has no superiors in pro benting his subject toan to an audience ills arguments are couched in the strongest language and yet so pleasantly told as to win the ears and hearts heart of his auditors while at times ho he soars into very brilliant flights of eloquence at other times lie ho is so witty as to gain hearty applause ile ho will not fall fail of being heard in the halls of congress AV 11 CLAGETT with his clean cut features keen dark eyes gray hair and whiskers and all the requisites of a true orator did much in this campaign in enlightening g the people on the live issues of the day whilo while lie ho Impart imparted cd more knowledge in a few moments of the vast ast resources of the live five great northern countries than the people of the balance of the state know knew before he has a happy faculty of winning tho the hearts of his and audience lence ai AD ketchum ho he found himself perched on a high platform on being introduced to the audience ile he marched to the front and said far back in the past some ono one invented the plan of placing speakers ou on a platform far above the people and this plan has come down to Us through many past generations to me this has always been distasteful I 1 am ain of the people and I 1 want to remain among them and upon their level and with your permission par mission I 1 will get down on the floor and talk to you my peers and with this he jumped down four feet to be greeted with applause and he hold held his audience almost spellbound tor for eighty minutes while ho he presented facts on lead silver commerce the resources slid and interests of tho the country and made mad comparisons of the two great parties and with convincing arguments proved the republican party had done most for idaho and her people and tho the best interests of the people were with that party few men are aie more concise or clear than mr clarett clagett while he possesses a magnetic bearing such as wins friends in III all his talk tile tho best interests of his party and the people u were ere his themes and although ho he Is art an aspirant for senatorial honors his audiences were never made aware of that fact by anything he said amm in planning the campaign it was suggested that clagett and phil ORo urko should go together through the state stale when this proposition was mentioned to phil lie he turned to clagett all and said all right ril ill go and talk to the bys and bedge you can talk to the gintle men ORo urko proved a power in the campaign and was warmly greeted and listened to wh wherever cherner erner he went uc ile was raised a democrat and staid such till a short time ago and is now fully able to toll why he ig 13 a republican in talking to a ho house use full of miners at mullen ho he said it affords me great pleasure to bo be among you my friends I 1 came to this country as a laboring man when 1 I arrived in this camp caknip I 1 had only six bits in me ine pocket and tho the babuin of me pants was nut very sound I 1 am still a laboring man mail phil is one of the rich mine owners of shoshone county at this point some man cried out to the effect that phil had wanted him to work in the mine at a lower rate than others paid phil told him ho he was a liar in such strong language as to frighten some lad ladles ies present but tho the orator knew who lie he was talking to and had nerve enough to face a regiment of such men his plain talk among miners won many votes for the republican ticket A democratic paper made a funny bull in speaking in saying that ahel he was poor ho he was a good democrat but as soon as ho he got rich lie he joined tho the republican party to get into respectable company this illis was about as bad as mr brumb ac it did in bolso city when in introducing martin ANIag lunis told of phil ORo urko aad two other irishmen going over to tho the republican lican party parly flat flatfoot footed cd after getting rich indge and he did not know why they did so slur unless iless it Is because e the irish are arc always tho the government the imported montana democratic orator did not seem to appreciate this fling at his people OTHER ORATORS on tho the republican side thoro there were other such orators as eloquent joe JOB witty and entertaining curtis I 1 bullivant bulli ant general roberts governor shoup Shou can state facts acts and talk straight at points but lie ho is not in an orator lie he Is so well known and liked as to gain an attentive hearing anywhere in fit idaho dubois has dono done so much for the good of tho the state slata that lie he wits was welcomed heartily every place ho he went and his speeches were well received lion hon W J mcconnell held largo large audiences at all places where lie spoke there were many other good speakers dubois clagett shoup and mcconnell are tho the four announced candidates dates tor for united states senators and there promises to be bal warm work tor for the legislature while the aop crop ot of dark horses promises to become quite numerous A democratic LACK CK the democrats had not good speakers and their importations from ohio montana and other aces did not take well with tho the people and it was uphill work with them that thai party parly will exert but small influence in th thi legislature to meet about tile the bird or of december but the few members will have a hand in electing two united states senators senator S since part of those democrats were elected through disaffection daue cllon in tiro tire party parly they no doubt will be importuned importuner by these ro eo public publicans ans to vote to suit stilt thorn them not one of tile tho candidates for senator ha a patent on tho the office arid and at this writing it would tale take more than a seer to tell lell how bow the contest will end but tho the machinery ot of tho the new state will soon be ba in active operation and prosperity will reign in the gem ot of tho the mountains titles and securities aro are mado made safe the power of nf mormonism has been suppressed and all signs point to tho the good of 0 the land arid and people IDAHO october 7 1890 |
