Show THE HIGHLAND BOY SIM SMELTER E LT E R A week ago the highland boy smelter turned out its first bar of pig copper this splendid plant which is owned by the utah consolidated mining company whose great copper mines are located in bingham in west mountain district this state has just made it its initial run and the outlook for ils its future is all that could be desired for nearly a year the highland boy smelter has been in course of construction the plant is located on a fifty six acre tract hear near the jordan river at a point a mile and a half southwest of murray the works being connected by a spur with the B R G W and the oregon shoreline Short line railroads the first dirt bein being r turned in the excavating for the faun foundation on august 11 1898 t the h e several edifices embracing the plant covering a ground space e feet an interesting description crip tion of the highland boy smelter its equipment and operation is contained in the last issue of the newy new york ork en engineering ineer 7 and minin mining journal which reads as follows the track for the delivery of ore and fuel comes in on a grade of three per cent until it reaches a trestle which is ig twenty one feet high and feet long almost the entire length of this trestle contains or ore and coal bins the capacity of the former being 2500 tons and the latter tons ore is delivered in bot tom discharge cars the bins also are of the bottom discharge type and underneath them runs an electric tramway the bins discharge the crude ore and coal into the cars in this line which extends to all parts of the plant the car with its operator is raised from one level to another by means of electrical elevators gorsof of pounds lifting capacity these elevators are in duplicate the sampling and crushing plant is situ abed close coulto to the tg ore bins ma and d the ore is there sampled crushed ind and again delivered into bottom discharge bins the material for converter linings is also prepared at this point fr from om here the crushed ores are taken to the roasting furnaces there are three of the type each of tons capacity contained in a steel building feet by feet the ohp calcines are delivered into brick calcine bins where they are again automatically discharged to the car on the electric tramway A dust dusk chamber of an improved type thirty feet high takes care of the fumes from the roasters boasters ro asters the draft is furnished by a self supporting steel staak feet high and sixteen feet in diameter the calcines are taken by means of the electric tramway to the main smelter building where they are delivered over the furnaces of which there are three each of tons capacity the smelter building is 75 feet wide and feet long and contains in addition to the furnaces two converters together with a claymile clay mill plant for the preparation of converter linings the center aisle of this building is spanned by a crane of twe twenty nty five tons lifting capacity arranged with three lifts so as to handle the converting apparatus with facility the furnaces discharge their matte directly into the converters which are carried by the overhead electra crane to their proper stalls where the matte is blown into pig copperi copper being cast in suitable moulds at the converters this copper is delivered at the ground level the railroad cars to be loaded with the pig copper product come in by a cut at the copper platform where the product can be trucked directly on to the car i the slag from the furnaces is delivered into large slag cars and which are taken to the dump by an electric locomotive the power plant consists of locomotive type boilers rated at horsepower which will carry steam at pounds one tandem compound condensing nordberg engine of horsepower ca ca win 5 r rf 7 THE HIGHLAND BOY SMELTER ELTEn NEAR 31 MURRAY URRAY lacity directly connected necked to a K X W westinghouse generator one compound blowing engine of a capacity of cubic feet and a complete condensing plant including cooling tower the smelting smelling sm elting plant pl anthas has been figured foran for an ore aa capacity p a e 1 it T 0 of f tons a day and plans are now bein being made to double th this s capacity the pow power er plant already installed being ample for handling tons there are also suitable shops 0 offices employees dwellings and boarding house ca mr frank klepetko had general supervision of the designing and construe tion of these works and mr george K fischer was chief engineer in direct charge their experience in in montana and the care time and expense in the preparation ot of the plans it is believed have resulted in a plant of the best kind not a single hitch occurred in putting the plant in commission now that operators are in progress mr R RT T white is superintendent jn in charge and mr H S knight is metallurgical chemist mr W E is financial manager both for the mine and smelter 11 the smelter has a capacity of handling tons of crude ore daily although as yet CONTINUED ON PAGE EIGHT THE HIGHLAND BOY SlI SHELTER ELTER CONTINUED FROM PAGE FIVE being practically in the experimental stage the output does not reach these figures but it is believed that it will not be long before this tonnage will represent the amount handled by the works every twenty four hours in a future issue of THE REVIEW it is proposed to illustrate the highland boy tramway which connects the companas comp anys mine with the railroad in bingham canyon |
