Show ERICKSON MINING DISTRICT SPECIAL correspondence vernon utah dec 26 this district was formed some time in the and was cut out of the tintic gintic district to the casual observer it seems strange that the mining people of our state should pass over this and other promising mining districts and look for investments in iii more distant parts parts perhaps which they can visit only once in a long while while there are so many places promising large returns for small investments at a much nearer range the klondyke goldfield tonopah To bullfrog thunder mountain not being in our state seems to be vastly more lucrative fields than anything in utah this district contains copper gold silver lead zinc manganese and black iron this is by no means a high grade proposition but contains large deposits and veins of low grade lead running all the way from 10 to 80 per cent most of which is found in concentrating form carbonates crystallized lead and galena there are many mines now operating in the district and employing from two iwo to six men each some using steam hoists and pumps copper ore has been shipped during the pas past t year from the district which report says netted the owner 50 per ton within a half mile of where the writer is now sitting is an outcrop of copper which assayed at the very grass roots from 4 per cent up about three miles from the same place is the highland lassie a copper property which assayed 34 per cent in copper 50 ounces silver and some gold on this property the owners are now running a new tunnel to cut the vein at a much lower depth adjoining this the same people own the last hope on whose dumps are several tons of very promising lead about three miles from the same point is situate the blaine mine now working and from whose tunnels and drifts some very fair ore has been extracted here also is the entonia M M com companas comp anys group of the bryan claims on this property some ha has s been spent and some feet of work done this property promises very brightly for the lessees lessels les sees it contains very large deposits of carbonates which is being jigged much rich block galena and some zinc of good grade at another point in the district there are three copper properties being worked which are making a splendid showing what seems to have been the drawback to this section is the question of water of which element there is altogether too much and in consequence of this obstacle many properties are now idle the prospectors have always found after sinking a short distance that an old style armstrong pump becomes necessary and then going lower have to give up for lack of a steam pump the properties need long tunnels cut low down toward the foot of the hills so as to drain all the upper strata the district is partly in tooele thoele and juab counties it is embraced in west tintic gintic desert keg Shee prock and table rock ranges and lies west from vernon about twenty five miles from which place the stage company has a mail route through simpsons SImp sons dugway fish springs deep creek and it is expected will shortly run an additional route to cottonwood and death canyons there is a good opening for a small mill in death canyon and with the proper parties behind it men of push and action there is no doubt that every prospect in the district 4 would be in full operation very shortly fuel such as cedar is abundant and can be secured at pretty low figures this canyon is about thirty seven miles from the jericho siding on the san pedro and the road to this railroad point is an all the year round road no hills or hard pulls for loaded wagons with water at intervals of ten or twelve miles from the canyons it is always a down hill pull but some have a good grade which need not scare anyone as the wagons come up empty or nearly so F J VINCENT 4 |
