Show CAPTAIN HANK SMITH sun goldfield nev perhaps the most picturesque and unique character in all goldfield is old hank smith hale hearty and seventy two in spite of his years the old gentleman is the picture of rugged health and manly vigor much of which he attributes to his outdoor life in the mountains of the west and alaska hank enjoys a wide arcle c acle of friends in this district many of whom he has known for years in other camps mr smith was visited yesterday at his lease on the atlanta group by a sun representative senta tive and artist and when asked if he objected to being sketched he answered by drawing up an empty box and after assuming an easy pose said let ler er flicker in his most entertaining manner he told of how he took sixty millions out of virginia city in the early comstock days clays how at one time when lie he was a millionaire in cold cash he bucked the fair haggin ring and went broke hank landed in frisco in 53 having come across the isthmus he spent six years in utah in the tintic gintic mines and park city and knew tom kearns of silver king fame now millionaire and former united states senator from that state when tom walked into camp with a pack on his back he was three years in alaska where he knew tex and ole elliott eiliott well and right here on the atlanta hank and his associates think they have one of the biggest things in the camp and it would seem that with his fifty years mining experience peri ence he knows what he is talking about confidence born of hope beamed upon his bronzed features as he pointed with pride to the bannings pann ings of coarse gold obtained at the thirty eight foot level where he cut the ledge the shaft is now seventy five feet deep he is going straight down to establish the first station at feet then crosscut to the ore body from present indications the hank smith lease bids fair to become famous the smith lease is only one ond of more than twenty on the atlanta group |
