veritable boule bards it is par excellence a haven of rest for tired nerves and the place of all places to him who enjoys good fishing it is no wonder that the late jay gould rin in his eff effort ort to get away from the mads dening crowd and wall street came up here during the last two or three summers of his life and camped in his special train on a side track to recuperate his tired nerves he said if he had known of it before and had started in on these vacations earlier he I 1 could have extended his years indefinitely 3 1 and he was probably right twenty five years ago wood river was I 1 the scene of a great excitement when the 1 famous minnie moore mine was dincov ered As has so frequently been the case I 1 t j it was discovered by accident I 1 have seen i a good many stories about how it was found but the following account of it was given me hy by a man who has lived there since 1881 he says that in the fall of 1880 dan scrib ner sr a prospector while hunting his horses in the foothills a mile west of where bellevue belleve now stands came across some outcrop ggs which had high values right en cn the 0 surface he located one claim and after dog aing some work on it and shipping a little ore 0 he be sold it to H E miller and his associates for r d I 1 they worked it for some time and of a large amount ant of 0 high grade ere cre and in turn sold it ft to palmer dent of london england under their management over were produced after this it was worked by leasers leaders for a year and then permitted to enter into innocuous desuetude it was supposed to have been worked out and allowed to fill with water in 1902 robert tusten who happened to be broke but who nevertheless had some sense and believed there was still ore in the mine induced tom Mor larity of hailey to put up with nith which he might go to chicago and endeavor to p ace it let him have the money mcney and to chicago tusten went where he enlisted the aid of a mr king a neighbor of I 1 E rockwell a manufacturer of office furniture who helped him to raise with which the mine was purchased although the mine had attained a vertical depth of only feet it had inclines which were 1000 feet deep and various leads All these workings were filled with water and the new owners had a big job on their hands to get it out however money time and skill will accomplish many things and two years ago this summer after great expense the mine was and work was begun in a very short space of time found and shipments new ore oadies were were resumed which have continued ever since stated that there are from it is various y to in sight that there of ore ready to be must be a large body taken cut is proven by the fact that last shipped forty three carloads month there were averaging twenty three tons to the car and bringing returns of over and this too under a management which cannot be given credit tor for much ability it has attracted a great deal of attention so much so that charles M schwab ex pres ident of the steel trust has purchased a control of the property Perty it is reported here that of Us inter all he has haq bought nj nearly irly est which is said to have been 43 per cent of the stock an fn in the company the ex steel king has placed his brother at the head of the company the directors of which now are joseph E schwab I 1 E rockwell M R warde ben A smith and J C nevin for several months there has been employed at the property a force of men the new management has just discharged thirty five and wm wiil institute a system of economy the discovery of the minnie moore led to others in the surrounding mountains it is needless to enumerate which they were inasmuch as lists of them together with their output have been published from time to time the panic of 1893 and the decline in the price of silver caused almost almast a complete shutdown shut down and they remained idle until two years ago when the new discovery in the minnie moore was made this caused a resumption of work on many of the properties and indications are evident that the wood river county will in a year or two be 9 reater greater and richer than ever it has been at present over men are being employed in the various properties distributed albut as follows minnie moore 65 relief 30 con virginia 16 croesus 30 major reeds liberal 15 lippman tunnel 6 tip top 30 oswego 5 muldoon 6 may be interesting to note that the guggenheim people are deve developing loping the lucky boy near ketchum which shows a fine body of zinc ore and it is also worth mentioning that the newspaper man mr T E of the river times is the owner of an excellent property not far distant within a few hundred feet of the minnie moore is the queen of the hills which produced is said negotiations over a million it are pending looking to tg the reopening opening re of this property between it and adjoining the minnie moore lies the broadford owned by williom which was given to ta him twenty years ago by a friend and which when opened up ought to become a valuable property with the spen splendid did faculties facil ties for transportation cost in the reduced por tation the greatly treatment of silver lead ores and with the exceedingly high grade and large bodies which have been found in this district it is hazarding not much to predict that the time when the wood river section distant is
