mine of the grave creek district near this city it developed that this mine has been baen steadily at work increasing state of oregon for three years past this mine has been steadily at oark increasing its equipment from time to time and daily growing bigger and better the owners of the greenback were men who did much but said little thus it was that the general public has been kept in the dark regarding the true worth of the greenback now however information is given out that tells the star story of the greenbacks Green backs fabulous worth it is operating 40 stamps and is producing 40 monthly of this amount is divided among the stockholders the stock is held by a few men eben smith of denver is one and william brevoort of new york is another aside from these there are a few other parties in new york and los angeles who hold stock the greenback was purchased originally for C W thompson the present manager and and superintendent jowas was the man who crawled through the mayanita ma vanita and underbrush of st peters gulch to look at the pocket where two men a horse and an were at work grinding out the gold from the soft surface roc rock lc of the ledge that later became the greenback mr thompson was young and energetic and hopeful he believed in the greenback and though he met many dis dig coura courage ments discouragements discourage ments that would have made many others heartsick he kept brave bravely y to his task and in due time the main ore body was struck and the property was ready for a mill first there were but five stamps then five more were added and later five more and this past year 25 more were added together wit 11 new and more powerful compressors hoists drills and concentrating cent rating tables as well as a large chanid ing plant to care for the tailings the greenback is yet in its infancy there is ore elou enough 1 h blocked out above the 1000 1 foot level to keep heep the present mill busy for seventeen years or more the big dredger of champlin company on en foots creek east of this city has at last been launched and is now receiving its machinery A huge boiler weighing over nine tons and of horse power was hauled irom from the railroad out to the dredger this past week and is being placed all of the other machinery for the dredger is being received at gold hill and is being transported out to foots creek champlin company hope to have all ready for business early in march the company has over acres of lich i dredging ground on foots creek this has been bee n thoroughly prospected and gives cretu returns ns of from 25 to 40 cents a yard champlin company also have two dredgers similar to the one built on foots creek at work near bannock montana two sets of five stamps which will be the first ten of the 1000 1060 pound beams for them the battery of the new granite hill mill have been received in this city superintendent wickersham has placed men and teams at the task of unloading the machinery and hauling it to the mines on louse creek the foundation for the new stamps has been made ready deep pits have been sunk and bottomed with cement and gravel this will form the everlasting base on which the new battery will rest the new hoist is at work and is regarded by mining men as the biggest machine of its kind in oregon it is a great two drum affair with a working speed of 1000 feet per minute and capable of operating to a depth of feet the work of overhauling and placing the new machinery at the sturgis hydraulic mines on forest creek has been completed by olmstead vance of los angeles who recently purchased them these placers are now operating on a far bigger scale than ever before among the new features is a derrick for handling the boulders and an electric lighting plant the water is holding up well and a good run is assured the big tubular elevator received some time ago for the deep gravel hydraulic mines of waldo has finally been set and is now at work manager W J wimer states that the new elevator gives entire satisfaction and is proving itself a wonder in the work of caring for the tailings which on account of the deficiency of the duin ping grounds caused much embarrassment in in i former years yearn it is tho the biggest elevator of its kind at work on ane coast and tosses d a 1000 pound boulder up through the 40 inch bich tube and over the sluices as these properties are making A few days ago he showed a review correspondent samples of ore taken from the vertical shaft being sunk on his claims the rock is of excellent character considering the
