Show IT used to be quite a number of years ago that when mining propositions of any importance were to be examined that it was feces sary to send mining experts to utah and the west from the east for this purpose times have changed in this respect howe however ver and now it is becoming generally known in mining circles throughout through olit the world that when a mine or prospect is to be examined in this intermountain region that expert talent in this line can be found right here in salt lake city where the array of mining experts metallurgists geologists and mining engineers compares most favorably with the list of the same character to be found in boston or new york As a consequence big mining syndicates do not send out as many eastern experts and engineers as formerly giving the preference to salt lake men engaging in these professions and the mining review is roud of the fact that they are all topnotch top notch ors and that they have established reputations for ability in their respective callings which cannot be eclipsed by the records made by their eastern brethren in another respect salt lake is forging rapidly to the front and this is in the determination of ore values and the assaying of ores for the different metals for be it said this city has several metallurgical establishments and assay offices which are the equal of any on the american continent and the tests made here are just as accurate just as reliable and just as satisfactory as if made in omaha new york or boston these conditions exist because of the fact that utah is now a most important factor in the mining world because our mines are the peer of any in the west and because people at home and abroad are becoming more and more impressed with the magnificent of utah and of this great western country THE smelting smelling sm elting trust according to recent dispatches has taken a stand which if adhered to will prove most beneficial to the average mine owner it is stated by the trust that it is its desire to increase the output of all classes and grades of ore to the greatest possible extent realizing however that the present schedule of smelting smelling sm elting charges is oppressive to the producer of low grade smelting smelling sm elting ores and in some instances virtually prohibiting the operation of a certain t class of mines it has been decided to reduce the charges on low grade ores with a corresponding increase for the treatment of ores of higher values this will equalize matters to a certain extent although the producers of high grade ore may feel that they have a kick coming in cons consequence consequent equen e the owners of producing mines and ore reduction companies should go hand in hand their interests are inseparable one cannot exist without the other unless the mine owner has a mill or smelter of his own for these reasons it behooves the smelting smelling sm elting trust to treat the small mine owners and the producers of low grade I 1 ores as li liberally berall y as possible as the smelter to operate successfully and profitably must have low grade ores to treat ir in connection with mineral of higher grade manager T R jones local manager for the smelter trust is quoted as saying that the interests of the smelter trust and the mine owner are in common this is undeniably true and the review trusts that the sentiment will be put into such actual application that every producing mine in this intermountain region may be worked to its greatest capacity SALT LAKERS have decided to join hands with their idaho friends in an effort to make a marked success of the session of the international mining congress which convenes in boise in july next indeed the initial steps have been taken and it has been arranged at the suggestion of john dern always foremost in such matters to send to Idaho on this auspicious spi cious occasion a splendid mineral exhibit from the stock exchange collection while in due time the governor the mayor and others with power to appoint will name a list of delegates and it goes without saying that the city and state will be well represented at boise during the meeting of the congress it is really obligatory upon the people of utah to do all in their power to make a success of this session of the international mining cong congress ess and not only from a sense of duty because of friendly feeling towards our sister state but also for reasons of policy as idaho is directly tributary to salt lake city and the trade of this great mineral and agricultural region naturally gravitates this way still even with this condition staring 0 us in the face we must not take it as a matter of course but must let the people of idaho know that we want their trade that we desire their friendship and that we are anxious todo all in our power to assist them the m in in every way possible just now idaho is more than anxious to make a success of this congress we can help them materially in the matter and at the same time greatly promote our own cause idaho was well represented in the congress held in this city several years ago let us remember the compliment and see to it that utah has the largest the best and the strongest representation at theloise the Boise meet of any state in this intermountain region with the return of judge G W bartch A E snow and steve baldwin from humboldt humboldt county nevada renewed interest has been manifested in the property of the morrison mining company which is located in the section mentioned in the workings of the morrison it is stated a six foot body of ore is exposed which runs high in its gold and silver contents C on tents among the visitors to north tintic gintic last sunday were theodore G wolf of scranton pa president of the scranton mining miling company and N A dunyan superintendent of the old tiernan mine ow owned by the scranton company As a result of the visit to the mine the reports of a big strike in its workings have been confirmed and it is learned that on the foot level the drift has been run 60 feet in a fine body of carbonate of lead ore which goes from 45 to 50 per cent in lead some idea as to the splendid proportions of this ore body being given when it is stated that the top sides bottom and face of the drift are in mineral of the value above stated and it is believed that the vein extends to the surface and that it also is permanent and goes to the deep mr wolf is highly pleased with the showing and so is mr dunyan nearly a hundred delighted tourists and visitors took advant advantage atre of the murcur excursion last sunday over the 0 S L and salt lake mercur railroads to mercur in camp floyd district where the con mercur gold mines and mill were thrown open to public inspection superintendent george Z edwards of the mines doing the honors at the mines while supt bupt janney of the mill took pleasure in showing his visitors through this great cyanide plant the editor of the mining review had bad the pleasure of going going through a portion of the old mercur mine being underground der ground about two hours and during this time he saw such mammoth bodies of good ore that he came out into the sunlight almost in a bewildered state the mine is in splendid physical condition with thousands upon thousands of tons of ming milling in ore blocked out and in sight this condition speaking volumes of praise for the efficiency of the superintendent of the mine the special excursion to tintic gintic camps was heavily patronized the visitors to mercur were greatly pleased with their ride from fairfield to mercur over the scenic line of the salt lake mercur railroad |
