Show I 1 THE NEW MAY DAY MILL on the dinst the editor of the mining review made a visit to the new may day mill at the may day mine tintic gintic district where he was given every facility to inspect and investigate the plant by 1 F W wood the in inventor and patentee of o f the dry process of ore concentration the system which will now be employed in the treatment of low grade may day ores rather expecting to find a somewhat crude affair in the new mill and the mechanism somewhat cumbersome and at variance with established rules and regulations the visitor was more than pleased at finding one of the most perfectly equipped plants to be found in the mining camps of this intermountain region every piece of machinery being of the best make and working in perfect harmony one with the other and with most satisfactory results in fact it was extremely interesting to lowthe fol treatment from the first crushing of the crude ore until it came to the bins as a finished concentrate with a recovery ands and saving of values of about 95 per cent to those who have an acquaintance with the usual method of concentration with its accompaniment of water slush and dirty slimes and often a woeful loss in the tailings an inspection of this new plant of this new process would be a revelation and in an in inspection spec tion of the mill when in operation a lady in her silks and with kid gloves on might safely go through the plant with its numerous departments without fear of ruining her raiment or soiling her gloves so clean is the operation and condition of the works still another feature of the mill that appeals to the millman is the small force necessary in its operation and the further fact that the system is automatic from start to finish the most important factor however being that a very high saving is recorded and at a minimum cost the fact that water is not required in the milling and concentration of the may day low grade ores meaning much in a region where water for milling purposes is not obtainable tai without the outlay and expenditure of large sums the wood dry process of concentration owned by the crown gold milling company of san francisco differs from other concentrating purposes in that a current of air instead of water is used in separating the metals from their gangue matter there are those who have had no faith whatever in the process and the long delays incidental to the equipment and completion of a new mill have in no way helped to assure the public that the new method would be successful however as the old saying is the proof of the pudding is in the eating and andthil this applies to the wood process of dry concentration as the product of the mill the fine concentrates cannot help but convince the most skeptical that it is a success and that its practical application on the milling ores of tintic gintic district means much for the future of this great camp in the operation of the mill the crude ore first goes through a blake crusher and then automatically into the dryers of which there are two in the equipment of the plant prom from the dryer the ore passes on through a dodge crusher and is elevated into the upper the screenings from no 12 and finer going into bins according to the mesh of the screens the product being ready for the concentrator cen the coarser material going through the rolls until reduced to at least a no 12 in size of screen when it is returned to the lower where it it is divided into afif fifteen teen different sizes from no 12 screen up to the ores as sized going into their respective bins ready for the concentrator the screenings being grouped together as follows in the different size of screens utilized 12 to 32 32 to 44 44 to 60 60 to 75 75 to 90 90 to to to to to to and to the screens employed being of silk instead of wire in such general use in milling operations from the different bins the sized ore is fed automatically into the concentrators ot of which there are four it being necessary that only one size of prepared ore be treated by the concentrator at any one time the capacity of which is placed in the neighborhood of twenty tons daily so that the capacity of the plant at the present time is about eighty tons every twenty four hours by a simple mechanism the sized ore from any of the bins is fed into the concentrators tra tors being fed from the top the fine material reaches a point where it falls upon a fine horizontally raffled rimed surface which has a downward movement being in in fact a revolving belt by means of swiftly revolving fans an air current is created the force of which is against the oncoming on coming ore so finely prepared the blast carrying with it the lighter material and dust allowing the heavier particles containing the metal values to pass on to reach the bins as concentrates the dust also later on in the operation is collected in the dust chamber the average value of the concentrates so the mining review is informed averages from 45 to 50 per cent lead 35 ounces silver and about 3 in gold to the ton according to the metallic contents of the ore the dust which in ordinary milling operations would be slimes and carrying the chlorides in the ore being collected in the dust chamber or slime bin inthe in the treatment of tons of ore said mr wood in enumerating the factors employed in the recovery of the precious metals ore that will go from 10 to 12 per pep cent lead 8 or 10 ounces silver and a small percentage in gold there will result about ten tons of slimes that killgo will go from 20 to 28 per cent lead 39 19 to 21 ounces silver and if the ore assays essays 50 cents in 9 gold old to the ton we find that the slimes or dust will carry froma to 6 in the yellow metal thus making an excellent shipping product without further treatment the may day mill which is operated by electricity as a motive power wis was practically turned over to mosby flindt lessees lessels on a royalty on the dinst within a short time mosby flindt will have absolute control of the plant when a company of san francisco people and salt lakers will be formed to be known as the utah dry concentrator cen company which will allow the use of the process of ore concentration and reduction upon a royalty and if the system as employed in the new works is as successful as the initial run of the mill would indicate it to be it is more than likely that several more mills of this character will be built in tintic gintic district as well as in other dry camps in this western country fred flindt an old park city millman who has had charge of the mill is meeting with the most gratifying success in its operation and assures the representative of the mining review that he is fully satisfied with results so far and that he is confident that it will do all that has been claimed for it mr wood stating that the results being obtained by y mr flindt were astonishing 0 and far ahead of what he himself had ever been able to accomplish the mill building is a fine structure and every feature of its construction would appeal to the experienced millman and builder the machinery is perfect in construction and very compact much of it being a marvel of ingenuity and workmanship every everything thing being automatic in its operation even the car carrying off the tailings being in its movements like aa an auto motan conveying as it does automatically the tailings from the tailings bin and emptying 1 them on the dump technically it i is s impossible at this time to describe the mechanism in detail odthe of the new may day mill but we can assure our readers that a visit to and careful inspection of the same would well repay those in any way interested in the concentration of ores |
