Show SAFETY AND HEALTH STATION OF BUREAU OF MINES AT SALT LAKE CITY under a recent appropriation by congress there is is to be established in salt lake city at the new mines build ing of the university of utah a safety and health station second in importance only to that of pittsburg pa provisions have already been made for a large instruction an and d demonstration room and apparatus and bench room a smoke room for self contained oxygen breathing apparatus training b and garage space for a rescue truck S space p ace for offices and research work along the lines of safety and industrial hygiene of mining and metallurgy will also be provided the station will be equipped with twelve sets of oxygen breathing apparatus electric cap lamps all types of approved apparatus for the collecting and testing of mine air and gases various types of gas masks and self rescuers the personnel of the station consisting of a mining engineer foreman miner first aid miner and clerk will be under the direction of dr arthur L murray surgeon and acting district engineer for eastern nevada utah idaho and montana this personnel supplements that of the rescue car now covering the district the station will make possible the giving of instruction in first aid mine rescue he advanced training course for mine fires and explosions the new bureau of mines safety course and instruction in the sanitation and industrial hygiene of mining and metallurgy besides instruction work the station will be in a position through its personnel and equipment to make cooperative investigations with operating companies who so desire of conditions and practice bearing directly upon the health and safety of their employees in cooperation with the university of utah school of mines there will be added to the curriculum courses in first aid mine rescue safety and industrial hygiene as applicable to mining and metallurgy another feature of the station is that there will be e at all times for the benefit of mines operating within a radius of miles of salt lake city a completely equipped rescue truck ready to respond on instant notice in case of mine fire or explosion the truck will carry rescue alpar atus oxygen pump reserve oxygen and regenerators first tirs f t aid material and resuscitation apparatus in case of serious disasters the mine rescue car of the district will also be available |
