Show OUTLOOK FOR THE COAL INDUSTRY wyoming industrial journal it is growing more and more apparent that american coal has no competition to fear from anywhere and that the rest of the world is ig about to assume the same relation to american coal that it has to american cotton and breadstuffs bread stuffs already there is a clamor for american coal in germany and elsewhere on the continent of europe and large shipments are being made to the mediterranean ports more astonishing than the unexpected demand for our coal is the fact that the home demand cannot be met because of the lack of transportation facilities steamers can be found ready to carry coal from new york or elsewhere to europe but the railways cannot carry it from the mines to the seaboard for export and carry enough to supply the home markets we have the coal and the ships will come after it but we have not coal cars enough to meet the requirements of both home and foreign demand this thi sudden and unexpected demand for american coal is only one of the many indications of the commercial and industrial revolution now in progress when crops are short in europe and elsewhere abroad american breadstuffs bread stuffs are exported heavily because the foreign hungry mouths inest must be fed for the same reason other american products including coal iron and manufactures of iron and steel are beginning to be in active demand abroad the coal supply of europe is a limited one and is being abbing rapidly exhausted and our vast supply must be drawn upon to fill the deficiencies these new demands upon our resources should be very gratifying to our people and our true policy will be that of preparing as rapidly as possible to meet them with the present demand for coal the prospects for the industry in wyoming are exceedingly bright already the demand from the surrounding states is such that it is supplied with difficulty and the fact becomes more apparent that new mines should be opened at once and the working force of those chok now in operation doubled wyoming coal has gained for itself an enviable reputation us a steam coal and the demand will doubtless grow Z row rapidly numerous shipments have been made to pacific coast points where the coal has been used with marked success the government uses many thousands of tons of coal annually on its war vessels in pacific waters and with fair freight rates wyoming 1 could no doubt supply all the fuel needed by uncle sam in the pacific the future of the coal industry is is so promising that it will doubtless stimulate prospecting through the coal bearing areas and wyoming with her thousands of acres of virgin fields will be the scene of increased activity in this important branch of the mining industry |
